Watch: First Excellent Tribute to This Year in Film - 'The 2011 Portfolio'

December 6, 2011

The 2011 Portfolio

Yep, it's that time. It's already December, the year is almost over. Along with big releases, Oscar bait and Top 10 lists aplenty, another annual tradition we see every December are numerous tribute videos, looking back at a year in film. It all began with oyguvaltshappy's first "Year for Drama" video back in 2007, and has continued every year since, because some of these are truly exhilarating to watch. This first one from 2011 (via Awards Daily), created by Alex "hatinhand" and titled The 2011 Portfolio, features some of the best clips and best music from this year ("Immigrant Song", of course). The first of many, already a must watch.

Here's the first cinematic year in review tribute video, titled The 2011 Portfolio, as edited by "Alex":

"The 2011 slate of releases, from The Adjustment Bureau to Zookeeper." While there's been years with more drama or more action, he mentions in the YouTube comments about this year: "This is where a cathartic and overarching statement would succinctly sum up the year's displays of creativity, passion, ingenuity, and bravado, but the only thing that comes to mind is: weird shit. Lots of weird shit… [But] what's not to like? Something for everyone." Indeed. The footage in this comes from 166 films, he uses 6 different songs, and took over a month to edit together in AVID. You can find the music and full list of film clips at those two links, if you're interested and can't recognize any of it on your own. Another great year in film! Thoughts?

Next year is certainly stacking up to be absolutely fantastic, but don't be so quick to dismiss this year. You seem to have forgotten stuff like 50/50, Melancholia, Midnight in Paris, Attack the Block, Like Crazy, Rango, Immortals, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Guard, Moneyball, Adjustment Bureau, Hesher, Tree of Life, and Our Idiot Brother. And those are just the ones I've seen. Horrible Bosses, Another Earth, Crazy Stupid Love, The Rum Diary, The Descendents, My Week with Marilyn, I've heard good things about all of those. Furthermore, we're still waiting on War Horse and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Maybe it can't compare with next year, but 2011 has certainly been a very good year for movies.

You seriously think 2011 has been a very good year for movies ? Pretty much all the movies you listed were really enjoyable (more or less) but none of them were actually that memorable. I can't point out a single film from this year that stood up from the rest of the crowd, even those with very high ratings were mediocre at best.

Agreed.. and btw.. idk how you and "tir na nog" left out Warrior.. I though it was amazing. But Drive was definitely my favorite so far. I need to see Shame and Girl with The Dragon Tattoo

I hear Matt Shapiro's is going to be out any time now, and then Gen Ip and Kees van Dijkhuizen are both coming out really soon too. I swear these videos are getting as competitive as Oscar season itself.

Foreign cinema seems to be ingored, mostly..

Davide Coppola on Dec 7, 2011

Ugh, I hate these... cuz it makes me realize how many movies I DIDN'T see.

Chazzy on Dec 7, 2011

There were not many good movies this year. thats what you just showed

not very good on Dec 7, 2011

I think the problem with this video is it's too long and not enough emotion in it. Maybe that's exactly how he feel about 2011 movies
