Mortal Kombat: Legacy

Warner Bros has debuted the first episode in a new 9-part webseries called Mortal Kombat: Legacy bringing one of the best video game franchises back to the (small) screen again. The short, in all 12-minute high def glory, debuted on Machinima's YouTube and can be seen in its entirety below. Kevin Tancharoen who directed and produced the popular, unofficial Mortal Kombat: Rebirth fan short, is bringing the same immersive directing style to this live-action digital series. It was that gritty short that got them to greenlight this and bring back some fighters like Jax, Kano and Sonya Blade. It's time for the return of Mortal Kombat!

Watch the full few episodes of Warner Premiere's new webseries Mortal Kombat: Legacy here:

How was that? If you're anxious to follow this entire series, "fans from around the world will be able to watch and engage with the entire Mortal Kombat: Legacy series through Machinima's YouTube channel." The cast includes the always badass Michael Jai White as Jax, Darren Shahlavi as Kano, Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade and Tamoh Pennikett as Striker. Written by Kevin Tancharoen, Aaron Helbing and Todd Helbing, Mortal Kombat: Legacy is an anthology of nine live action shorts, and brings to life the motivation behind each character's participation in the Mortal Kombat tournament. Each episode will provide never-before-revealed insights into characters featured in the upcoming videogame as well as the game's universe.

Where is sub-zero and scorpion?

Well made production with some promise for a tv show or possible movie. But this is mortal kombat in name only. It bears zero resemblance to the gaming franchise and is merely generating interest by using something that is fimilar to the public. But it's early days yet so I won't get on my high horse without following it until its conclusion.

Talk about one hell of an ad campaign for a video game!

13

wow, that was long and boring. wasnt that broad in star trek?

Suckitcraig on Apr 12, 2011

14

if it was long and boring why did you even bother to comment? nice use of "broad" too.

Anonymous on Apr 12, 2011

15

Only people who love it should comment? Come on.

Ryderup on Apr 12, 2011

16

And - I haven't even seen it yet and still I'm commenting.

Ryderup on Apr 12, 2011

17

well watch it.

Anonymous on Apr 12, 2011

18

I'm just saying why waste more time commenting? I try (usually fail) not to comment on articles I do not like. If its a 3-D article, as you know I will post a negative comment. Slightly hypocritical I know but it is what it is.

Anonymous on Apr 12, 2011

19

But wouldn't it be very one-sided if only people being positive were comented? What's the use of comments if they are just meant to be positive??

Ryderup on Apr 12, 2011

20

@Ryderup...not much was added to SuckitCraig's criticism...Imo, if someone is gonna post negative I'd like to see some elaboration.

The DP is to be commended, but the director should go back to school.

22

Thanks for the praise, but give Kevin some credit. He pulled off a heck of a lot with very little. Jax Pt 2 rocks, and so do the upcoming eps. I don't think you guys'll be disappointed. Each episode is VERY different from the previous...

It was pretty good, shows potential promise but like anything has alot of time to go either way. Hopefully it will be what all Mortal Kombat fan's have deserved for a long time and hard core violent fatality kills!!!

Those Mortals didn't Have much Kombat unless you count gunplay, Hopefully theres more Kombat in the further episodes of Mortal Kombat.

The good: cinematography. The bad: slow-mo power ranger hand-to-hand combat. The ugly: Jeri Ryan, she's looking rough. Overall: Solid first piece. Some of the action choreography was painful, but if they can improve on this, MK Legacy could be very entertaining. Caught my interest.

Appreciate the comment on the photography!

The DP on Apr 12, 2011

32

Wow, soooo cheesy. Director is not ready for anything feature length or television for that matter. And the DP is stuck in a Michael Bay emulation class from the late 90's. Ugh.

Marty Martin on Apr 12, 2011

That's awesome! Michael Bay emulation class. Nice one. Made me chuckle.

I thought it was pretty good, enjoyable. But I didn't like the casting choice for Kano, I just couldn't believe him in that role. All I could think of is the guy who played him in the first MK movie, that casting was spot on!

Some parts just irked me (SWAT un-tactical entrance and uninspiring firefight, the energy blast sfx, the uninspiring slow-mo) but I understand what they had to accomplish with so very little. We're spoiled to even have free Mortal Kombat webisodes.. From what I read from the Director of Photography's comment (btw, who did an awesome job), I'll keep my eye out for the next coming episodes!

Boon on Apr 13, 2011

44

Was Ok, was hoping for some epic 1v1 hand to hand fights like the rebirth short. Kano vs Jax shouldnt of been so brief and one sided. Also its Mortal Kombat the story is naturally going to be cheese.

Hey Alex! Will you be showing all the episodes on first showing?

Timnimbus on Apr 13, 2011

49

No, probably not any more after this one unless they're REALLY good. I suggest you follow on YouTube or Machinima.com for all the new ones. I think new episodes are being released every week!

50

That was pretty sweet. Can't wait for more!

Lamar on Apr 13, 2011

51

its not in the same universe as the Rebirth trailer. thats my only disappointment. this is a literal retelling of the in game characters storys. where i loved the gritty real world take that Rebirth had. kind of a bummer

Anonymous on Apr 13, 2011

52

hmmm i do not like this. the fight scenes were cheesy throughout. jax managed to dodge a thousand laser bullets when he was shot at like sum lame chuck norris movie. rebirth managed to capture great fight scenes as well as a captivating storyline.

Mazkat77 on Apr 13, 2011

53

Not Quite Right. Better then I expected but still not great. The Cyborgs will be in this so I'm gonna keep watching it for them, but the storyline for MK has so much more potential then any director can ever seem to capture. This was the special forces side of the story which is probably the easiest side to tell with a low CGI budget, but for the same reason, to me, It's also the most boring perspective of MK. If I wanna see a swat team I'll watch ANYTHING ELSE, where's the magic in bullets? I wanna see more focus on Shirai Ryu vs Lin Kuei. I wanna see more brutal Kharacters like Kabal, and Baraka, Ermac, Shao Khan, and most of all I want to see OUTWORLD! you kan't do MK without Outworld and Edenia! I'm not a fan of the real world take that rebirth had, but I did like the choices for Jax and Sonya [although they should be military not police]. But I will go ahead and see it through, I just hope to see a better director with a bigger budget get hold of Mortal Kombat someday.

awesome cant wait to see what the other characters look like only downfall they could've casted a better kano and sonya. if they keep it up as a series they could really far they could do full episodes with seasons and everythiong if they did it through HBO or some shit

just amasing love it keep it coming

Connellys_hot on Apr 17, 2011

59

It was good. Not as dark as Rebirth but if they can do this they need to role out to the big screen. Look what they did to Batman. A comic book character turned into a dark character. Mortal Kombat- a video game- turn it into a dark movie.. They need a Christopher Nolan type to big screen this.

Angeltheraider on Apr 21, 2011

60

I find it funny some people are talking about how cheesy the Jax and Kano fight was due to it being slowed down for the fight scene! Michael Jai White has been doing the martial art thing since he was in his early teens and has far more skill and was holding back. Kano and whoever that guy is playing him clearly had to pick up a few moves for that whole scene and even on the 2nd episode...just give it time...things will pick up!

Mortal Kombat is awesome so far! I just found a blog that's giving out the preorder DLC for all the costumes, and the new Kenshi character DLC! I just got my Reptile Klassic Kostume but I don't know if there's anymore keys left. If you want to check it out, here's the site: http://freemortalkombatdlc.com.nu
