John Carter of Mars Teaser Trailer

"Fate has brought you here, John Carter!" Disney has finally debuted the first official teaser trailer in HD on Apple for Andrew Stanton's upcoming sci-fi adaptation of John Carter of Mars, now simply known as John Carter, without Mars. Playing John Carter is actor Taylor Kitsch, who is joined by Lynn Collins, Mark Strong, Willem Dafoe, Thomas Haden Church and many others. This plays like more of a western, which goes along with what Stanton has been saying about making this as a historical epic, but it's a great first tease and I'm intrigued. I love the music and I think this is a great first introduction, but that's just me.

John Carter is based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic sci-fi adventures. The movie tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands. The cast also includes: Samantha Morton, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Daryl Sabara, Polly Walker and Bryan Cranston. Disney is bringing John Carter to theaters everywhere on March 9th, 2012.

I want to love it but I'm just not feeling it.

sonnychiba1 on Jul 14, 2011

I'm having to go with you here on this.  Taylor Kitsch does not look like my idea of a former Confederate Army cavalry captain.  I'm just not getting the original flavor of the Burroughs story here.

Michael W on Jul 14, 2011

same - it felt like prince of persia meets the hulk meets Clash of the Titans - nothing spectacularly new here 🙁

Dom on Jul 14, 2011

I've been looking forward to this one for quite some time. It's definitely pretty cool, but Taylor Kitsch seems to be just standing with his mouth open in almost every shot. Also, I hadn't heard that Spy Kid was in the movie before watching this, definitely a 'wtf' moment.

Matt on Jul 14, 2011

Well yea woulndt you be if you found yourself on mars all of a sudden? I think Kitsch is perfect for the role. It looks pretty good so far. Wonder how close they'll stick to the book... I expect the unfortunate avatar comparisons to come soon though.

Anonymous on Jul 14, 2011

Having his mouth open in awe or shock or confusion doesn't really bother me, but it looks like he might start drooling at any moment. Maybe that's just his style of acting, can't really remember from any of his other movies. I'll be more curious to see how he looks in a full scene since it's hard to judge from a bunch of random shots.

Matt on Jul 14, 2011

Yeah, but Matt...remember, this is only a teaser trailer--what, a couple minutes of footage? Having read APOM, I am interested to see this, since it's been in development for a long time, with different directors being involved at different points. But if ANYONE out there says, "AVATAR rip-off!"....I may have to unscrew some heads and s**t down some necks. (Tip of the hat to R. Lee Ermy for that...)

Anonymous on Jul 15, 2011

Avatar rip off!!! (just kidding) But on a more serious note, does anyone know if this is going to be a more family friendly PG13 sort of deal or something a little more brutal? I seem to remember hearing Stanton was aiming for a dark R rated feel, but I could be mis-remembering things and I haven't read the books so I just don't know how the source material stacks up.

Matt on Jul 15, 2011

Great first glimpse. I really like the tone they're going for with this one...

ryan on Jul 14, 2011

Yep, same here! And we have plenty more to see, this is just one very early glimpse...!

Alex Billington on Jul 14, 2011

I know, Alex...I mean, after all these years, we're finally getting to see this story on the big screen. Sadly, I wonder how many will moan about how it's ripped off other films....when in fact other films have cribbed from APOM for years. We'll see how it all turns out next March!

Anonymous on Jul 15, 2011

Yeah I like the ton a lot as well. The FX look really solid already.

Anonymous on Jul 15, 2011

I don't need every scene and vista to be "new" or something "never seen before"..I just need the movie to be good..which it looks like it may be

Gerald Walker on Jul 14, 2011

Kitsch just seems too young for the role...and it also looks like Scorpion King 3: Another Desert

Maxx on Jul 14, 2011

So wait he's an author that escaped into his imagination about mars to sell his book. Ok got it.

NeoSlyfer on Jul 14, 2011

16  Not quite the story.  Best thing to do is read the book (heck, if you find a copy with the awesome Frazetta cover, get it!).

Anonymous on Jul 15, 2011

I'm not sold yet. Too PRINCE OF PERSIA-y with some whiffs of MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE starring Dolf Lundgren and Courtney Cox... I don't know what I was expecting but that aint it.

Bill Rusnak on Jul 14, 2011

But Bill...remember that this is based on a classic of the pulp sf genre.  It's entirely possible that those films you mentioned cribbed from the original APOM novel.

Anonymous on Jul 15, 2011

Carter is looking a little bit like a scrawny He-Man there with that thing on his chest. Still looks decent though. They really should have kept the "..of Mars" in the title though. ---

DRM on Jul 14, 2011

he'll always be Tim Riggins to me but this looks good and I'm glad to see Taylor Kitsch's film career is taking off

Geoffrey Shauger on Jul 14, 2011

Given the serious tone of the soundtrack, Peter Gabriel's "My Body is a cage" I was hoping for something that looked darker, with less Disney-isms. Oh well, too early to say I guess.

Darius on Jul 14, 2011

I'm definitely sold on it. It looks really good except for the monster at 1:14 in the trailer.

BlackFantasyFilmmaker on Jul 14, 2011

cowboys and aliens will my choice of wake up in desert and battle alien films for this year.

Boob on Jul 14, 2011

But this is for NEXT year....just sayin'.

Anonymous on Jul 15, 2011

im sure there will be another along those lines next year too.. ill watch that isntead. =p

Boob on Jul 15, 2011

Not what I was expecting, its actually better. The look of Carter is a little too Prince of Persia for me, but the movie looks like it will be good. I'm sold.

Lamar on Jul 14, 2011

And it's got to be better than that SyFy movie, right?  (But that did have Traci Lords...hmmm.....)

Anonymous on Jul 15, 2011

Needs more martians. But this is just a teaser, let's see how they look on the first full trailer.

Luis M. Milán Leal on Jul 14, 2011

Arent those 2 from Wolverine?

Anonymous on Jul 14, 2011

Yup. But don't hold that against 'em....

Anonymous on Jul 15, 2011

As far as I'm concerned, I'd trust Andrew Stanton with my first born so I'm completely sold.  Love the song especially.

SkylerB619 on Jul 14, 2011

I was actually quite impressed by this trailer. Great, unconventional choice of music that immediately offsets things and creates a different tone. The acting, etc obviously can't be judged at the moment, but I'm optimistic.

equustel on Jul 14, 2011

It's all about the story.  I am surprised at how people will shred a trailer to pieces... A great movie is a great story.  Acting, special effects, etc, are important.  But if the story blows.  The movie blows.  YOU CAN'T TELL IF A STORY IS BAD BASED ON A TRAILER!

Ammon Anderson on Jul 14, 2011

"YOU CAN'T TELL IF A STORY IS BAD BASED ON A TRAILER!" Good points, and you can shout the last line from the mountaintops until you're blue in the face...but some people still need to pull the Pre-Cog attitude and sneer that THEY can tell the story based on 2 minutes of scenes.  Sheesh....whatever happened to having an open mind?

Anonymous on Jul 15, 2011

Ugh, I absolutely hate Taylor-fracking-Kitsch ever since I saw him in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Gabriel Visser on Jul 14, 2011

Apparently you haven't watched one of the greatest shows of the past 5 years: Friday Night Lights. I'm sorry.

equustel on Jul 14, 2011

You can't expect me to watch a show about football, when I absolutely hate the sport. :

Gabriel Visser on Jul 15, 2011

Friday Night Lights is not about football.  Football is always in the background.  Its about families and communities.  It's quite the brilliant show worth checking out...

BigRed on Jul 15, 2011

Loser on Jul 14, 2011

I'm sold just by thinking Andrew Stanton is behind all this. I can't really decide on the trailer, but I can tell you this: MORE PLEASE!

Looks promising, nice use of Peter Gabriel's cover of Arcade Fire's "My Body is a Cage."

Xerxexx on Jul 14, 2011

Yeah...the music really helps.  I'm hoping that it's good, but the only way to know is to see the completed film. Besides, if it gets more people to read the original ERB stories, so much the better.

Anonymous on Jul 15, 2011

Hmm...3 days AFTER Mass Effect 3 comes out.  It looks good, but I'll bee MIA for about 8 weeks at that point.

Anonymous on Jul 14, 2011

Don't blame you.  I may have to lock up my copy of ME 3 in a safe so I can go see this....

Anonymous on Jul 15, 2011

It does have that Prince of Persia feel to it..I'd like to see more of the martians.

jah p on Jul 14, 2011

the music is "My body is a cage" from arcade fire, but with a better version by Peter Gabriel

Joseluisferreira on Jul 14, 2011

Been hearing about this for years it seems, looks alright I suppose.

Crapola on Jul 14, 2011

Disappointing for Stanton's first live action pic.  I enjoyed Prince of Persia but I know many didn't and this seems like a half-rate POP which can't be good. Nothing new or exciting, pretty generic and the lead can't act on this evidence.

ate on Jul 15, 2011

Nothing new or exciting? Huh?  This is a film based on a classic novel that appeared YEARS before POP!  I mean....try to find the book A PRINCESS OF MARS and read it.  It's quite good, but a lot of latter films and games and comics have cribbed from it.  So now, I guess, a film based on this book looks like a rip-off of other stories that took elements from this same book. Something's screwy here, and it ain't me, methinks.

Anonymous on Jul 15, 2011

Looks like 'The Red Lantern' or something.

Anonymous on Jul 15, 2011

Maybe its that good trailer effect, but this phenomenal in my opinion.

Cody W. on Jul 15, 2011

looks phenomenal**

Nice job ruining any future credibility you may have by not editing before posting.

JL on Jul 15, 2011

You try too hard.

Cody W. on Jul 16, 2011

I was not interested in this flick till I saw this trailer. WOW! The tune, arcade fire's " My body is a Cage" is amazing..never this version before..classy indeed.

Enrique Rivas on Jul 15, 2011

Not sure about the ratings, Matt.  But I like the "Avatar rip off!" meme...Lord knows some people will cry that out. Well, they may have to make some changes from the book (hunt it down and read it man!  It's good!

Anonymous on Jul 15, 2011

yes lets see that as the poster

Boob on Jul 15, 2011

Avatar rip off, no BUT... I will Cheekily say: when I saw the ships & the horses I did think of cowboys & aliens.  (HA!)

Anonymous on Jul 15, 2011

God please tell me this is going to get Kitsch more shirtless roles... It looks god awful, but he looks amazing!

Teacherkid on Jul 15, 2011

Not too sure about the movie, but that was a good trailer... evocative and such

Richie on Jul 16, 2011

Badassery, i hope it's awesome as it seems. Any idea about the music.

Ron Torque on Jul 16, 2011

Wow this trailer is amazing I think the wait on this movie is worth it.
