Watch: John Lasseter Chats 'Cars 2' Inspiration in Sneak Peek Video
We just featured the theatrical trailer for Pixar's Cars 2 earlier this week, which as we now known is kind of a James Bond movie mixed with an international racecar adventure. Yea, that sounds cheesy, but I'm sure it will have all the same charm every Pixar film has. To explain how they're achieving that, John Lasseter (director of the first Cars) recorded a fun "Sneak Peek" video talking about how he was inspired by traveling the world. "If ever I have the chance to do a sequel, I want to take the characters around the world." He also says the character Finn McMissile was actually developed for use Cars, but not used. Watch the full video!
Cars 2 sees Lightning and Mater traveling around the world for the Race of Champions that includes other disciplines like Formula One. Mater ends up in a 'Hitchcockian' case of mistaken identity, saves the life of a British secret agent named Finn McMissile and becomes embroiled in a spy thriller, but no one believes him.
Cars 2 is being co-directed by former Pixar producer Brad Lewis, making his directorial debut after working on Ratatouille, as well as Pixar mastermind John Lasseter, director of Cars, A Bug's Life and Toy Story 1 & 2, who came back to work on this sequel last year. No screenplay credits are listed yet. Disney is bringing Cars 2 to theaters everywhere in Disney Digital 3D starting June 24th this summer. Getting excited yet?

really like it. even though John is a studio head, if he says it's great, I believe him. to me, the video was trying to pump up hype about Cars 2 and get people more excited because I think the overall reaction has been "Cars isn't my favorite, the trailers are fine/good, and I trust Pixar with my life." This is Mr. Pixar giving it his stamp of approval, and he mostly succeeds. John Tuturro is awesome, not the craziest thing. But he is The Jesus. The product placement makes the worry bubble up a bit, even though it is a mega merch machine. But in this video about the quality of the movie, we know Cars merchandise is the reason the sequel is getting made, don't remind us if you want to seem legit about quality. The people who want the toys will know where to get them. But maybe that's asking too much. Or maybe I'm thinking about it too much.

You are not. I was thinking the same thing. In fact you said everything I wanted to say.

Pixar's Cars is (with Toy Story II) my favourite Pixar movie.

He's the director of course he'll say it's good, what do you think he's going to say? Cars 2 sucks, don't see it, we finally screwed up? The way the story came together is quite lame, what would Mater do? Mater is the worst character to come out of the Pixar universe and only in a children's movie would an idiot be mistaken for a spy. Notice what I said there? Cars 2 is probably the first Pixar movie directed solely at kids. Mater is the definition of gutter humour as well, playing on stereotypes and general stupidity. Unimpressed and I look forward to seeing Brenda Chapman's Brave not be slaughtered next year by its new director and Monsters Inc 2.

In other news Lee Unkrich announced via twitter he's working on a super new Pixar movie.

i love Pixar but this wreaks of the George Lucas factor, make a sequel just for the cash. Cars is at the bottom of the list in terms of great Pixar films, but it made the most in merchandise. Kids just go apeshit for the toys... and Lasseter even plugs the toys in the video! If this is really made for the wrong reasons, their first flop it will be.

this was a video made for a consumer products show - hence the toy talk.

Lasseter comes across as only interested in making money and pretending to be interested in the art.

Is it just me or does he sound really stoned? Well I've never really liked Lasseter, he creeps me out a little... I don't know why. Anyway Cars was an ok film and I suspect that Cars 2 will be ok too. But as opposed to other Pixar movies that cater to both children and adults, the Cars series is mostly popular with the kids, for me it holds no interest.

Reckon he sneaked in some product placement. John was "inspired" by that big fat Disney check from his slice of Cars merchandising.
