The Flowers of War Trailer

"Stop! This is a House of the Lord!" Wrekin Hill, the US distributors for this film, have debuted a new trailer on Deadline for Zhang Yimou's The Flowers of War, starring Christian Bale. This is China's entry into the Oscars this year and is a WWII story about an American man who comes to shelter and save a convent of young girls stuck at a church in occupied Nanking, China during WWII. I got to see this film recently and it's fantastic, Bale gives an outstanding performance, and it's riveting and emotional from start to finish. This new trailer captures some of that, and it's mostly in English so you'll understand all of it. Take a look below.

Watch the latest official trailer for Zhang Yimou's The Flowers of War, originally via Deadline:

The story in The Flowers of War, based on Yan Geling's novel The 13 Women of Nanjing, will see Bale as an American priest who shelters a group of prostitutes and female students in his church during the 1937 wartime atrocity known as "The Rape of Nanking". The movie was directed by Oscar nominated Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou, of films like Raise the Red Lantern, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower and A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop previously, as well as the 2008 Olympics Opening Ceremony. Wrekin Hill is distributing in the US, but it will first open in Chinese theaters later this year. Footage was first screened during TIFF, as the film contains about 40% English dialogue, 60% in Mandarin.

Amazing - its all down to the cutting of the trailer though - the last one was awful.

I just had a flashback, when the choir was singing, all I could think of was when Bale was in the choir in Empire of the Sun.  in my opinion that's not a bad thing.  Looking forward to this.

Had the same thought, Bobdel.

The movie sounds good, but the first thing I thought of when I saw the picture you used was Equilibrium. It's gotta be the outfit that Bale is wearing.

The priest garb is similar...but the pic doesn't remind me of it...lucky you.

Its pretty much safe to say that honorable men were not too prevalent in the Japanese military circa WW2.

This looks great! I can't wait to see it. I can't help but feel hat Christian Bale is a an asshole, but he does amazing work.

He's a human...we are all assholes.

I can't agree with this comment more, most brilliant men do not fit into the norms of society because of their misunderstood methods.

Zhang + Bale = badass cinematography and performance

Alex, will you be writing a formal review of the movie?

After the war, Bruce Wayne went to the Himalayas to train under Ra's al Ghul.  lol

Looks like a cross between Peckinpah's Cross of Iron and The Killing Fields. Looks really great, Bale seems like he's gonna be good in this, this director has never dissapointed
