A living legend, a final adventure, an epic journey home. Magnolia Pictures recently debuted this official trailer on Apple (tip to TFS) for Spanish filmmaker Mateo Gil's new western Blackthorn, which stars Sam Shepard as the legendary Butch Cassidy in his "final" adventure. The cast also includes Eduardo Noriega, Stephen Rea, Magaly Solier. It's been said (but unsubstantiated) that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were killed in a standoff with the Bolivian military in 1908 - this is that story. It actually looks pretty damn good, I'm not sure where it came from, but check out the trailer. "You're a damn legend, and here you are."
Watch the official trailer for Mateo Gil's western Blackthorn originally via Apple:
In Bolivia, Butch Cassidy (who's now calling himself James Blackthorne) pines for one last sight of home, an adventure that aligns him with a young robber and makes the duo a target for gangs & lawmen alike.
Blackthorn is directed by Spanish filmmaker Mateo Gil (interview here), of Nobody Knows Anybody, and co-writer on Alejandro Amenábar's Agora, as well as numerous shorts previously. The script was written by Miguel Barros. This first premiered at the La Palmas and Tribeca Film Festivals this year. Magnolia Pictures is releasing Blackthorn in limited theaters starting October 7th this fall. Visit the film's official Facebook.

I love westerns, even the cliched ones of Eastwood's early days. This looks like it has good cinematography, and Sam Shepherd is a good actor. Looking forward to it.

I hate the word 'Legend'. Hate it. Legendary figures supposedly killed dragons and brought entire nations to their knees. That idiot from Jackass who killed himself drunk driving would be viewed as a 'legend'. Legends aside this film looks really good, I love the desert looking scenes already.

So...is this a retelling of the Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid story or another adventure where Cassidy meets a new kid? Either way this looks to be excellent and I am IN!

This looks good...but NOT, I repeat NOT as a Butch Cassidy story....don't ruin the memory of classic characters such as Butch Cassidy or the Sundance Kid. Also, Butch never shot anyone until shortly before his own death.

...also, his last adventure was with the Sundance Kid...there was no going home.

I know it wasn't confirmed that he died in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but come on HE DID. This looks good enough by its own merits, the reference isn't gonna do 'em any favours, don't know why they did it

Not sure about that,I saw a repeat of an interview from the early seventies with his now dead sister and she said that he lived and came home for funerals incognito.

I'm so fucking in. I'm a western and samurai junkie. So when a good one cokes along, I jump in.

Never substantiated that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid died in a shootout in Bolivia. There are some who have stated that both made it back to the states. Don't let the earlier Newman and Redford film cloud your judgment. This looks like a great one to me.

Hey! The guy from Game of Thrones is in there too (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) playing Young James. Nice.
