Peter Jackson on The Hobbit

Ohhh now this is just wonderful! To top off the great reveal of Weta's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, another fun Weta reveal has arrived this morning. Peter Jackson posted his very first 10-minute long video blog from the set and production offices of The Hobbit. It comes from his official Facebook (originally from AD). Yes, it has Ian McKellen in it (aww man), yes it has fighting and LOTR music, yes it has Martin Freeman as Bilbo, yes it just brings a warmth to my heart watching this because it's so amazing to see this team together finally shooting this and being so open about all of it. I totally love all this. So dive right in.

Watch the first video blog for The Hobbit below, and be sure to follow his Facebook page for more.

In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit… The Hobbit, being directed by Peter Jackson in two separate parts, is set in Middle-earth 60 years before Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in a trilogy ten years ago. The Hobbit films, with screenplays by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson, will be shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. The Hobbit follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, played by Martin Freeman, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. The first part of The Hobbit hits theaters December 2012.

This is great, first the apes trailer now this, cant wait.Wonder what it will look like in rawcode in 3d. Its costing 500million,does that make it the most expensive film ever {for two films in one so I guess 250 each},and thats just the start budget.

There is a lot of heart into it. The jorney of production looks almost as big as the story itself.

Part of PR b/c of the friction between New Zealanders and the last production?

I am pretty excited for this, and I feel asleep in Return of the King. I always liked there and back again more, it is so beautifully self contained, and it has so much more narrative drive than the trilogy. And despite most of the battles and fights being on a much smaller scale, I think they have more impact. The mirkwood bit with the spiders could be legitimately terrifying.

There are times when even gold can lose it's luster, but when epic stories are told of great courage, honor, loyal friendships and of course Gandalf these stories you treasured for a lifetime. They are priceless. I can't wait to see The Hobbit:) Thank you Alex

I can only wonder how much more epic in terms of special effects Fellowship, Towers, and Return of the King would have been had they decided to film The Hobbit first and only now do those three movies. I'm totally excited about this and am anxiously waiting for part 1 to be released.

Wow, I'm not even a LotR fanatic, although I loved the trilogy, and I got chocked up a tiny bit by the end part of this. Godspeed and good luck the cast and crew in attempting this one (2) more time(s). Movie magic/making, isn't it awesome?

I met Sir Ian McKellen a few months back... he told me he hadn't been asked to be involved in the film and my heart sank at the time, I had this horrible feeling that it just wouldn't be the same without him... lucky for me who telling a slight fib! 🙂
