Watch: Test PSA Video from Eric Powell's 'The Goon' Animated Movie
"Quality you can bludgeon with!" We're still waiting to see Eric Powell's animated comic book movie The Goon, as the project has been stuck in development hell, unable to get the financing. David Fincher even showed up to panel at Comic-Con in 2010 in support of the film, where they showed some early test footage in a bar. Following that event, a teaser trailer debuted, but the project still hasn't gone anywhere. Now Powell himself has released another test footage PSA on YouTube (via CS) featuring The Goon, with Clancy Brown as the voice (and Paul Giamatti as Franky), to try and drum up some more buzz. Check it out below!
Watch the test footage from Blur Studio for Eric Powell's The Goon, embedded from YouTube:
The Goon is a comic book series created by Eric Powell in 1999 and published by Avatar Press. It follows the adventures of the Goon, a muscle-bound brawler who claims to be the primary enforcer for feared mobster Labrazio. The Goon (and his sidekick Franky) often get tied up in "other machinations," often in relation to the evil zombie gangs under the command of the Nameless Zombie Priest (ahh!). The series has a distinctly paranormal slant, with the average story concerning ghosts, ghouls, skunk-apes, extra-dimensional aliens, and mad scientists. While they've been teasing this for a while, it still doesn't have actual release plans yet.
hope this gets going

The comic is really good. I actually thought this was well under way, it's a bit disappointing it hasn't got funding.

Ha ha! Knife to the eye! I love that bit!

I got all excited at first because I thought there was news of it finally going ahead. But alas, must wait longer. How does this NOT get funding with David Fincher and Giamatti behind it. Those are two well-respected individuals in the film industry, plus the badassness of Clancy Brown, one the greatest character actors of our time. And with all the zombie attention going around these days, HOW?! Please, someone, save this...

Because studios are dumb, and when they hear "animation", they immediately think "children". So you can see how the director of Se7en and the star of Sideways may not be a particularly good way of marketing this film, in the eyes of the studios. If they had half a fucking brain, they would give it a hard R and promote it on Adult Swim and Xbox Live and so on. But the won't, and if this does ever get made, I doubt it will be with LA money.

you're absolutely right. And I think there is such large audience out there for this.

Well shit, I had been really looking for this since the first teaser came out. So much time had passed where I heard nothing about it since then. Eventually I brought it up and to my friends and they tried to convince me that it was never going to be a movie or rather the teaser was just a promotion for the comics. Glad to know I was right the whole time. I hope it gets the funding it deserves
