The Grandmasters

In Martial Arts there is no right or wrong, only the last man standing. Oh yes, Wong Kar Wai making a martial arts film? Bring it on. The Playlist has found the first official teaser trailer for Wong Kar Wai's The Grandmasters, his upcoming martial arts project about Ip Man, the legendary martial arts grand master who trained Bruce Lee, played in this film by Tony Leung Chiu Wai. Not that we haven't seen similar to this before, it's just beautiful fight choreography. Even at barely over a minute it's exhilarating to watch, I can't wait to see more. The cast also includes Zhang Ziyi somewhere in there. Martial arts fans need to catch this!

Watch the first teaser trailer for Wong Kar Wai's The Grandmasters from YouTube:

The story of martial arts grand master Ip Man (Tony Leung Chiu Wai), the man who trained Bruce Lee.

The Grandmasters is directed by highly acclaimed Chinese filmmaker Wong Kar Wai, of films including Chungking Express, Ashes of Time, Happy Together, In the Mood for Love, 2046 and My Blueberry Nights previously. The screenplay was co-written by Wong Kar Wai, Haofeng Xu and Zou Jingzhi, from a story by Wong Kar Wai. This isn't set for release in China until 2012 and although Annapurna Pictures has US rights, we don't expect to see it here until 2012 either. We'll keep an eye out, but also go to: Wong Kar Wai News.

"Wong Kar Wai doing martial arts?" ...he also made this back in 1994

JennyB on Jul 19, 2011

Wong Kar Wai is better than this. Are his best years behind him? My Blueberry Nights wasn't great and that was back in 2007. 2046 was flawed but still had great visuals and that was back in 2004. Have to go right back to 2000 for his last great film.  The trailer makes Grandmasters look generic, which is surprising for a Wong Kar Wai film. I hope it's more than it appears.

2046 great visuals?  Yeah.  But Tony Leung was a god in it!  Give credit where it's due.

Pretty... but shaky camera and fast editing are obscuring the action again 🙁

Misterq on Jul 19, 2011

The editing feels clunky to me. The choreography is pretty basic stuff. The rain washes out any sub-par cuts (literally.) This movie was already done and done better by Donnie Yen.

Christopher Carpenter on Jul 19, 2011

Already done better by Donnie Yen? I wasn't aware that The Grandmasters had been released? Unless you judged the entire film based on just over a minute of low quality trailer footage? Nah, nobody would be that foolish, you must have seen some kind of early preview version... 😉

Yes, it was done better by donnie yen in 2008 when sammo hung choreographed Ip-man. Sure it might be a good movie, but martial arts in film is about fluidity, imagination, and originality, which I didn't see at all in the trailer. Most of it was rudimentary action that's been reused for the past 15 years. It's a bad trailer.

Christopher Carpenter on Jul 19, 2011

Also IP man was directed by Wilson Yip not Donnie Yen. Donnie Yen is an actor get your facts straight.

fight choreography was done by sammo hung, may be you need to learn how to read first, and i agree this movie sucks with no fluidity, tony leung have never been a martial artist and this movie will suck.

It hasn't even come out yet!

Wong Kar Wai? That's pretty much all you need to know... Nice to finally get some real footage though, looks stunning!

Been waiting for this for so long, it was suposed to be released this Chinese new year but been postponed and continued shooting again and again. This is going to be his masterpiece.

Did Chris Doyle shoot this?

looks awesome

truong18 on Jul 19, 2011

no, Chris stop to work with wkw since 2046, but they're friends again since a few years. Chris said that 2046 was unecessary and said he loose 4 years instead to work with other friends directors.

That big brush letter type bit at the end was cool. looks like most saturday nights for me after I take steroids and get roid rage and batter the whole of the city with my giant fists. ho ho ho.

Crapola on Jul 19, 2011

I wish Donnie Yen was still apart of the Ip man films

dim2thesum on Jul 19, 2011

the movie is a complete different perspective of ip man's life. and besides donnie yen no longer wants to be apart of the ip man films.

Translation: Kung fu, just two words. A horizontal and vertical stroke. The wrong fall. The right stands. Don't you agree?

Aanihc on Jul 19, 2011

WOW! That was awesome! I can't wait to see this and compare to IPMan.
