Though the budget of Michael Bay's next project Pain & Gain might be small, the stars of the film certainly are not. Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg are leading the story about a couple of steroid-abusing knucklehead bodybuilders from Florida who become criminals involved in an extortion ring and a kidnapping plot that all goes horribly wrong. Now Variety has word that Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker, Real Steel) is in talks to join the film as Adrian Doorbal, a big-hearted bodybuilder who works out with Wahlberg's character Daniel Lugo and decides to get involved in this dangerous scheme. More below!
Ed Harris is also signed on to play private detective Ed Du Bois and Rob Corddry recently joined the cast as John Mese, the former accountant and notary who owns the gym where Lugo works. Bay has said that there won't be a lot of action in this film, but that almost seems like a waste to have talent like this with no action. For Bay, little action would still have the same amount of action as a basic thriller, so maybe he's just being modest. Either way, I'm interested to see what he accomplishes with this cast, a much smaller budget and a story that doesn't have giant robots, asteroids or explosions.

I too believe he's being modest 🙂 I'm happy he's finally getting to do a passion project. I have nothing against his Transformer films, but I wish he'd move on and it would also be interesting what an other director could bring to the franchise..

The Rock is the only one in this film that even slightly resembles a bodybuilder..Mackie doesn't look to have an ounce of muscle on him...lol
