Though recently iconic singer Barbra Streisand has come back to the big screen as an actress in the Meet the Parents sequels and the forthcoming film The Guilt Trip with Seth Rogen, she still hasn't taken the time to get behind the camera since her 1996 film The Mirror with Two Faces. Apparently that all changes now as Showbiz 411 (via The Playlist) Streisand is slated to direct a love story called Skinny and Cat about writer Erskine Caldwell and photojournalist Margaret Bourke White who were the only foreign journalists in the Soviet Union when the German Army invaded in 1941. And guess who's attached to play them? Read on!
Apparently Colin Firth and Cate Blanchett are attached to play the couple. It's not said who is writing the script, but Streisand hopes to start production in January 2013, but she's currently having trouble getting financing together for the drama, not matter how compelling the story. These kind of films are hard to sell, and usually only valuable to a studio if they get Oscar attention. It's sad, but that's show business, as we are all reminded every few months. But with Firth and Blanchett attached and Streisand making this her first directing turn in nearly two decades, that says there's something special here. Stay tuned.

i'm skeptical - a love story set against the backdrop of '41 russia? anyone familiar with history will understand why this sounds odd.

The script was written over 25 years ago by Linda Yellen. Streisand originally wanted to star in it back then.
