Billy Bob Thornton in 'And Then We Drove' & 'Bad Santa 2' This Year

Last March we learned that Billy Bob Thornton was finally in negotiations to reprise his role as the foul-mouthed jolly man in Bad Santa 2. Then over the summer, Dimension Films looked to two writers, Johnny Rosenthal and John Phillips to write two different scripts for the sequel, and the best one would get the greenlight to go into production. While we haven't yet heard which script won out or even vague details on a story, The Playlist recently talked to Thornton at the Berlin Film Festival where he's premiering his most recent directing gig Jayne Mansfield's Car and said he'd be shooting Bad Santa 2 as early as this fall.

On the script, Thornton says, "The writer is still working on the script, he's doing his rewrite right now. We saw the first draft and we just had a few little things we wanted to take away or add and he's doing that. The plan is to shoot that in the fall" The actor also added that if all goes according the plan, the film would see release at Christmas in 2013. That means it will have been just over ten years since the release of the original film in 2003. Frankly, I can't believe that the idea of a sequel last more than just a passing conversation, but for a comedy sequel to come alive ten years after the fact, that's pretty miraculous.

In addition, Thornton also revealed that his next directorial effort, a road trip film called And Then We Drove, will shoot this summer. The plot details are being kept under wraps, but Thornton says, "This is predominately me and one other actor that are the main characters and there are a couple of other characters that are in maybe a third of the movie. Everybody else is going to be kind of in and out. It's sort of a trip across the United States. We're working on that, we won't be done with it for a while but we plan to shoot it this summer." Apparently the film is inspired by Thornton's strange romantic relationship with Angelina Jolie from years and years ago, so that should make for an interesting romantic road trip.
