Blanchett, Wasikowska and More to Direct Segments in 'The Turning'

Plenty of actors have turned directors, but not so many of them come together for one single project. The land down under is having some of their finest acting talents make their directorial debut in an omnibus feature composed of short stories from Tim Winton's short story collection The Turning. THR reports Cate Blanchett (Hanna), Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) and David Wenham (300) will make their directorial debuts with segments in the film alongside 14 other filmmakers taking on several different linking and overlapping stories that each stand on their own, but enhance the others around them.
Here's a more specific explanation of the various stories in Winton's collection:
Set on a coastal stretch of Western Australia, Tim Winton's stunning collection of connected stories is about turnings of all kinds -- changes of heart, slow awakenings, nasty surprises and accidents, sudden detours, resolves made or broken. Brothers cease speaking to each other, husbands abandon wives and children, grown men are haunted by childhood fears. People struggle against the weight of their own history and try to reconcile themselves to their place in the world. With extraordinary insight and tenderness, Winton explores the demons and frailties of ordinary people whose lives are not what they had hoped.
Usually you don't hear of someone as young as Wasikowska jumping into directing so quickly, but apparently she's ready to put herself out there as a filmmaker. She'll also be joined by Benedict Andrews, Jonathan auf der Heide, Tony Ayres, Shaun Gladwell, Rhys Graham, Justin Kurzel Ian Meadows, Yaron Lifschitz, Claire McCarthy, Ashlee Page and Stephen Page. It will likely be something along the times of Paris, Je T'aime, but without the location specific parameters keeping it locked in one city. I do love anthology features, and having these actors directing for the first time only gets me even more interested. We'll keep you posted as this project develops.
