Christian Bale and Casey Affleck Confirmed for 'Out of the Furnace'
by Ethan Anderton
April 6, 2012
We've heard that Christian Bale had circled back around to potentially star in the original thriller Out of the Furnace and Zoe Saldana would join him. Now a press release has confirmed that casting, and also reveals that Casey Affleck has joined the cast along with Sam Shepard (Safe House, Black Hawk Down). Scott Cooper is directing the film which follows a man named Slim (Bale) who, upon release from years in prison for murder, just wants to keep his promise to marry his girlfriend. However, his path changes when he seeks revenge once he learns his brother was murdered after getting involved in some gambling racket.
Affleck will play Bale's brother Rodnsey Base, Jr. while Saldana is playing Bale's girlfriend. meanwhile Shepard is playing Red, the uncle of the two brothers. The film begins shooting next month, and while Robert Duvall was once rumored for a role, I'm betting Shepard has taken that role. Ridley Scott was once in talks to direct, but now he's merely producing via his Scott Free banner along with Leonardio DiCaprio's Appian Way production company. Affleck has proven himself to be quite the fine actor, perhaps even surpassing his older brother Ben Affleck in the quality of performances and films. I know I'll be looking forward to this project, because it's original and has Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper at the helm.
