'Contagion' Writer Will Script 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' Sequel

Following the success of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, there was plenty of buzz about a sequel coming together sooner than later. Director Rupert Wyatt had the option for a sequel built into his initial contract, and last November, Fox made sure to lock down Andy Serkis to reprise his role as the revolutionary ape Caesar. Since then, development has been somewhat stagnant. But now THR reports Contagion and The Bourne Ultimatum writer Scott Z. Burns has been hired to script the sequel picking up after the apes have started to overthrow San Francisco and a virus starts to spread across the world and destroy civilization.
Having the writer behind Contagion script the sequel which would include the advancement of the virus that begins to spread in the end credits sounds pretty perfect, and he also knows action after Bourne Ultimatum. Specifics on the sequel are scarce, but it will follow the apes on the path to emerge as society’s new rulers. Previously, Wyatt had discussed a couple different options for the sequel, though it's not clear whether either of them will manifest themselves in the script from Burns. Either way, if it can match the same quality as the first film and keep the story interesting, then we're in for a real treat.

I heard it's going to be called "Revenge of the Return of the Planet of the Apes: The Uprising."

I love it! Great idea to start the sequel hope it sticks and it doesn't go all the way into whatever, the most interesting aspect is how people deal simultaneously with the virus AND the apes taking over. Psychologically, mentally, physically etc. it makes an intriguing prospect moreso than another smash & grab film. Please keep it this way!!!!

Contagion was a snoozefest. Rise was uneven rubbish.

Although I was completely satisfied with the way the film ended, I wouldn't mind having a sequel for this one. Just as long as Andy Serkis is involved, its aaalll goood 😀

Perfect! RotPotA is one of my favorite movies from 2011 and this franchise is the best place for sequels. Even Caesar wouldn't say NOOO!!! to this.

ooooooh, i like this news! I just hope they keep up the production value, these movies can easily go into the realm of "craptacular" if they skimp on effects, Serkis and other keys to the visual excitement which made RISE so enjoyable aside from the actually solid story.
