Before he decided to take on the film Argo, in which the actor will also star, Ben Affleck was looking at potentially directing American Bullshit, a new thriller from Atlas Entertainment, the company founded by The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven with the banner's producer Richard Suckle also involved. The film is being crafted from a script that was #30 on last year's Black List that tells the true story of Abscam, the FBI's 1980 undercover sting operation of Congress to root out corruption which was the brainchild of the world's greatest con man, and now Variety says David O. Russell (The Fighter) will direct the film.
Deadline says his reps have denied the story, but we're going to stick with Variety on this one. Russell is finishing up post-production on The Silver Linings Playbook starring Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro and Chris Tucker, back in films after a few years absence. And while Russell has been attached to several projects before taking on that drama, it doesn't sound like anything else has come up, and American Bullshit could very will be the director's next project and Christian Bale might even be involved. Sony Pictures is behind the Eric Singer scripted film, but there's no word on when production might begin. If all goes well, it could lens before the year is out, but that's assuming Russell doesn't line anything else up before then.
