Ed Helms Will Play Rusty Griswold in New Line's 'Vacation' Reboot
by Ethan Anderton
July 11, 2012
Last we heard about a reboot of the Vacation comedy franchise (without the National Lampoon's moniker now), Horrible Bosses writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein were set to make their directorial debut with a script they also wrote. Shortly thereafter, there were rumors that Ed Helms was going to play an older Rusty Griswold, taking his own family on a misadventure of a vacation this time. However, the actor dismissed the report only as rumor, though he could have just been playing coy. Now Variety reports Helms is definitely in talks to star in the film which will shoot after production on The Hangover 3 ends.
It will also fill time while Helms is on hiatus after shooting the next (and hopefully final) season of "The Office" next spring. Apparently the time between now and then will see New Line making some changes to the script in order to bring the film's budget down a bit. Of course, we don't know what kind of mischief and problems Rusty Griswold will encounter on his family vacation, or whether or not Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo will show up in some capacity to see their son off on his own trip. Either way, with a great comedy duo in Goldstein and Daley behind the camera and the script, I'm hoping this one isn't a disappointment.

YAY!!! Although he doesn't really look like Rusty, Ed Helms is a great comedian.

Considering there have been 4 different actors, all looking quite different, playing Rusty Griswold, I don't think that's a problem.

True...but then again there were four different Rusty's..but if you're judging based off of Anthony Michael Hall's Rusty then you're absolutely right.

Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo 's characters have to be in it to "pass the torch" to their son and his family.

They shoulda just convinced Anthony Michael Hall to do it again, he's the best. Remember that time he was in TDK?

Won't lie—and not just to buck what's inevitable—but if i could chose, I would opt for Ethan Embry to reprise his role as Rusty. Ed Helms' approach to comedy is already exhausted although I understand studios need a "star" to give 'Vacation' new life.

Ed Helms is a bit too old to play Rusty Griswold isn't he?i'd rather see a cameo of Anthony M Hall and Jane Krakowski hopefully...thank god they didn't get Will Ferrel to play Rusty...
