Warner Bros. has a pretty great relationship with Steve Kloves. He wrote all but one of the Harry Potter films (Michael Goldenberg wrote Order of the Phoenix) and helped to make the Potter series the highest grossing franchise of all time. He's also set to write and direct a live-action Jungle Book story for the studio, and now Variety reports that WB is in negotations with Kloves to write and direct Defending Jacob, a legal thriller based on William Landay's best-selling novel. It follows a district attorney father who leaves his job to defend his son from a murder charge, but he's unsure of the son's guilt or innocence. More below!
During the 1990s, it seemed like every year there was at least one movie based on a John Grisham novel coming out with huge, A-list stars in key roles. That trend has diminished quite a bit in the years since, but we're still getting solid legal thrillers like The Lincoln Lawyer every few years. The genre is certainly full of creative potential, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what Kloves can do outside of Hogwarts, especially behind the camera as a director. He's directed two movies in the past, and rumor has it Defending Jacob will start rolling before his upcoming Jungle Book adaptation. Thoughts?
