Hugh Jackman Talks 'Wolverine' Timeline & Mentions X-Men Cameo
Though it would have undoubtedly been awesome if Darren Aronofsky had stayed on to direct The Wolverine, we're still excited about James Mangold stepping in and teaming with star Hugh Jackman to tell the Wolverine story that's been begging to be seen on the big screen since the first X-Men movie hit theaters more than a decade ago. The duo have already mentioned that The Wolverine will take place after all of the other films we've seen in the X-Men saga, but in a new interview with Parade (via Bleeding Cool), Jackman confirms that and says we'll also see another X-Men member in the movie. But who? Read on!
Here's the exact quote Jackman gave to Parade when asked about The Wolverine:
You want to get me into trouble, don’t you? [laughs] Okay, the movie takes place after X-Men: The Last Stand. My character is at his lowest. He is supposed to be able to heal himself, but he may encounter someone who has worked out a way to really hurt him. And there is a cameo from one of the past X-Men in it.
The mention of a cameo in The Wolverine is interesting, especially considering what Bryan Singer is doing by bringing together the veterans (Jackman included) and the cast from First Class into his upcoming sequel Days of Future Past. This will obviously be a separate entity, but with Wolverine at "his lowest," what are the odds we'll see the return of Famke Janssen's Jean Grey character, either resurrected again as the Phoenix or in flashback form to haunt Logan following the tough choice he made at the end of X3?
That's only speculation right now, and Mangold has already mentioned that Jean is gone at this point on the timeline, but a cameo from her makes sense: Jean may be the only person capable of "really hurt[ing]" Logan since he's virtually indestructible and we already know that he'll be more emotionally vulnerable in this movie. Regardless of what other familiar face shows up in The Wolverine, we're excited to see what Mangold, writer Christopher McQuarrie, and of course Jackman, have to offer on July 26th, 2013.

I'm still bent outta shape that Singer and his ego went and retconned X3 and Origins:Wolverine. If you didn't like it then fine, but don't have to ruin the whole series for your own tastes.

What are you talking about?

Characters and character traits from those two are ignored by First Class, where he was consulting/producing. They pretended that only X1 and X2 happened. For example, characters like Emma Frost and Moira were in the series already, but now are totally different people. X3 and Wolverine both had the elder Charles standing and walking, but in FC they show him being paralyzed in his youth. Since Singer wasn't involved in either of them, they opted to ignore them so now it's a shitshow. I liked X2 a lot, but damn.

X3 was just put together in a rush since James Marsden did a last minute ditch for Superman Returns... if you see the original story they were working with it would have made more sense....

Well X3's story wasn't the problem for me, just the parts from FC that have stopped this series from being a complete set. X3 was a little flimsy, but overall wasn't offensive to the series. I even liked Wolverine despite its flaws. I'm just bugged by Singer, but it's not a huge deal. It's not like the plots were airtight to begin with, I can ignore it.

Rogue also hurts Logan in "X-Men" with her absorbing powers.

Also Magneto has the ability to turn him inside out if he wanted to

The chick who plays Phoenix was rumored to be cameo-ing a few months ago so I persume that's who it is.

Really... This is the marketing dish has sunk to? Spamming comments? Makes me loathe that company even more now.

After X-Men: Last Stand? I had no idea. Must have missed that. I'm glad they're taking that approach. I really wanted to see how he picked up the pieces after Last Stand.

This franchise needs a fresh reboot without Fox or Singer.

Indeed. Figures my favorite comic series of all time would get the least awesome set of movies. They should be the best...

Like filmtogo, the first person that I thought of was Rogue. Especially with the way that she left, it would cool to see her (and nice to see Anna Paquin in something other than True Blood) return to help/inspire Logan to snap out of his low point. As Guy who comments on things mentioned, it was reported that Famke Janssen was on location, so it will probably be here in some capacity. Hopefully it's not a flashback or ghost-of-Jean-Grey scene though.

The Muramasa blade can disrupt his healing factor and kill him. If he is in Japan, I would love to see the Silver Samurai wield it's He actually gave it to Cyclops in the comics as a fail safe in case Wolverine ever lost control, Cyclops had tthe authority to kill him. Nerd class dismissed.

I don't like the idea of bringing Jean Grey back

Has anyone considered it being Professor X? I mean i feel like at the end Professor X will try to convince him to come back to the Xmen and say theres a grave danger coming. Which can set up for future days past!!

From ComiXology: "X-Men: Days of Future Past (Collected Edition): Collects Uncanny X-Men #138-143. Re-live the legendary first journey into the dystopian future of 2013 - where Sentinels stalk the Earth, and the X-Men are humanity's only hope...until they die! Also featuring the first appearance of Alpha Flight and the return of the Wendigo." OOOOOOOO! Maybe, just maybe we'll get some Alpha Flight action in this new X-Men flick as well?

Xmen needs reboot .Needs the old outfits like in comics,no black costumes anymore.Would be better and it works in Avengers.Wolverine needs his cool mask and yellow spandex it is not lame.Sabretooth must be wilder.Cyclops must lead Xmen better and not get killed by Jean Grey,Rogue should be hotter and a sexy flirter. She needs flying and get strength punching the bad guys and not get so emotional all the time.Storm should not be Halle Berry.Iceman needs getting cooler and be in icemode all the time.colossus needs to be russian.Gambit should be who he is in the comics.Jubilee has to get bigger role .Jamie Bell should be Pyro. Mystique should not say stupid things like mutant and proud, very lame.Where is hot girl Rebecca Romeijn? Don't kill off Xavier unless you make Age of Apocalypse movie after killing Xavier in the past. Archangel should be in it. Deadpool should be Deadpool.Juggernaut Should be big like Hulk.and fight Colossus. Forge should be an Xmen building some cool Xmen inventions. Don't forget the Sentinels.Psylocke should get the right powers and not getting killed in one movie.Magneto should not always be the main villain.Get Mr Sinister and Apocalypse.Better stories, Omega Red versus Wolverine.
