Is Matthew Vaughn Confirmed to Direct 'Star Wars: Episode VII' Now?

Matthew Vaughn / Star Wars

Well, this is worth raising an eyebrow, but not much more until we get official word. At the beginning of the month, Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn emerged as the first name rumored to be in talks to direct Star Wars: Episode VII. It was presume that he was likely one of many names approached for the new trilogy in the iconic sci-fi saga, but now we might have a hint that he's really the choice to direct the sequel. Actor Jason Flemyng, who played Azazel in X-Men: First Class and has starred in eight other films Vaughn has either directed or produced, was asked if he had talked to Vaughn about anything Star Wars related, and his reaction seems to indicate that he knows something we don't. Read on!

Here's the interview with Jason Flemyng at a Seven Psychopaths event (Star Wars chatter starts at 1:08):

It's hardly a safe bet, but having Flemying saying "I'm sure I'll get the call for Star Wars" seems to indicate that he might know that Vaughn is getting the job and answered this question because he thought the news had been revealed. But that also might just indicate that he's heard the same news we all have. When asked if Vaughn is interested in Star Wars, people (like The Film Stage who pointed out the HeyUGuys interview) are saying he looks like a deer in headlights and tries to backtrack, but really it just seems like he's being goofy and acting more like shocked that someone would even ask if he was interested in the franchise.

Despite Flemyng's solid working relationship with Vaughn, I wouldn't necessarily say he's the best source to determine whether or not Vaughn is directing. The actor isn't even cast in Star Wars: Episode VII, so if anything this is just hearsay for now. An announcement has to be coming soon if Frank Marshall's talk about the list of candidates only being down to a couple of names is true, so stay tuned for the latest updates.

It would make even more sense as to why he dropped x-men. Jus' sayin'.

Wish they'd gotten Kosinski. Oh well.

I'm one of those people that adored Tron: Legacy. Dude knows his set design - no doubt related to his background in architecture. I was also a fan of how well the soundtrack was meshed with the rest of the film, but I don't know how much of that was him.

I'm with ya there, I thought Tron: Legacy was pretty great and I think Kosinski would be a good choice for SW7. Like I've said before, I want this project to either make or break a young director because I know they'll put the passion into it that it deserves then.

I can't even begin to describe how much I agree with you. The guy knows how to make awesome things look 100x awesomer. Even with a pretty bad script.

I'd rather have an unknown do it.

The deer in the head lights look was pretty genuine so I think it's confirmed that Vaughn is going to be directing SW7.
