'Jack Reacher' Author Talks Casting Tom Cruise in a New Featurette

If there's one thing that has fans of Lee Child's novels featuring recurring character Jack Reacher worried about the film adaptation, it's the casting of Tom Cruise. The actor is almost the opposite of how the towering, buff character is described in the books. But shortly after the casting was announced, the author gave his seal of approval on Cruise's casting saying, "Reacher's size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way." Now the author is back in a new featurette for the film from director Christopher McQuarrie, and he again addresses the casting of Cruise. Watch below!
Here's the featurette for Christopher McQuarrie's Jack Reacher from Yahoo:
Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me. And sure enough, ex-military investigator Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) knows the killer is a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right–and soon the slam-dunk case explodes. Christopher McQuarrie (director The Way of the Gun and writer of The Usual Suspects) writers and directs this film which also stars Werner Herzog, Rosamund Pike and Richard Jenkins. Paramount Pictures is sending Jack Reacher to theaters on December 21st this year.

If the author doesn't mind nobody else should, either...

Lee Child has gone on record saying he has dreamed of having a movie made from his books. he did not need to sell his books or let Tom Cruise play the part. he could have derailed it, but he wanted to make a dream come true. do people really think he did this for a paycheck? would he really risk years of success over one movie? Come on!!

Yep. Besides, Tom Cruise is awesome. It's just become more or less popular to bash him on the internet. Dude's talented, rich, and good looking.. three things I bet none of his detractors are...

And hard working, the man produces most of his movies now. Which is more than most actors can say for themselves.

Believe me, I'd love to like Cruise, and I used to, but his deep involvement with the Scientology sect has made me completely cold towards him. Scientology is a dangerous organization that uses its followers to pump money from and uses tactics towards its opponents that are just unacceptable. There's enough information from the sect's former members and some investigators to prove that the sect only wants money and power. If Cruise leaves the sect and publicly admits that Scientology is BS then I might once again pay money to see his films, but not before. Here in Europe Scientology is not seen as church in many countries but rather as a shady business organization, which in fact it is. As long as Cruise is part of the sect he keeps admitting that he approves of the sect's behaviour, and that is something that I can't forgive him.

Money or not he doesn't seem to mind. That's the main point...

I really do not think Tom Cruise should play this role. I am not sure he will make any comparison to what I have in my mind. In my mind Jack Reacher is a Big man and military looking.

2 things Tom is just not anything Reacher is described as but it`s going to be fun as hell to see what he does with it and hopefully he will get me on board.

I agree he doesn't meet the size requirements of Reacher. But Cruise can pull this off. I'm not his biggest fan but I give him credit where credit is due. For those who say "military looking". He's played many military roles. Most "military looking" men are a hair cut and a shave, not a body type. I'm hoping this to be good but it will never replace the book. I just hope it stays true. I thought Matt Damon made an excellent Jason Bourne but they tour that first book to shreds. The movie was NOTHING like the book. That is the Bourne Identity.

Most people dont even know what Jack Reacher is bookwise so it doesnt really matter overall, personally it doesnt matter if the author doesnt care. Jack Reacher was described as a hulking 6 and a half foot tall giant with a demeanor that is no where near Cruises typical action guy schtick. As a fan I have every right to be pissed off that they casted Cruise when the character is nearly the exact opposite.

It's like making a new Conan the Barbarian movie and casting Rob Schneider as Conan.

I always thought Reacher would be more like Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. A character similar to Walking Tall.
