For many, William Monahan will always be best known as the Oscar winning screenwriter of Martin Scorsese's modern classic gangster film The Departed. But the multi-talented triple threat has written a few high profile projects since his '06 Oscar win (including Tom Cruise's upcoming sci-fi film Oblivion and the highly anticipated Sin City: A Dame to Kill For), and he's even dabbled in directing with London Boulevard. Now, Variety reports he'll have the chance to write, produce, and direct a new thriller called Mojave, and he's snagged actors Oscar Isaac (The Bourne Legacy) and Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) for the leads.
The story involves a man who escapes into the desert and finds a "doppelganger-like antagonist" and gets caught in an intense whirlwind of violence and crime. In our modern culture the phrase "doppelganger" is used to mean "lookalike," but its folklore origins often associate it as being a paranormal double of someone else. Might one of these characters out in the desert already be dead when the two meet?
Isaac and Clarke are both terrific talents (Clarke especially impressed me with his work on the cancelled-too-soon TV series "The Chicago Code"), but since they don't resemble each other at all, it'll be interesting to see how they end up complementing each other on screen with this "doppelganger" aspect. Hopefully Monahan will find a more steady hand as a director this time around as well, and with production slated to start early next year, we won't have much longer to wait until we find out more about this project.
