Jessica Chastain Will Not Be a Sexy Scientist in 'Iron Man 3' After All

Iron Man 3 / Jessica Chastain

Well, that's a bummer. Just about two weeks ago, before The Avengers began smashing box office records, we learned that one of the superhero sequels following next year had gained a new cast member in the form of the lovely Jessica Chastain. Originally she was too busy to take a role in Iron Man 3, but then some production delays allowed her to potentially take the role of a sexy scientist in the film. However, it appears the source of the report was a little too over zealous as Chastain updated her own Facebook page to tell fans that she would not be appearing in the superhero sequel alongside Robert Downey, Jr. after all. More below!

Chastain wrote on Facebook:

"Sorry to say that ‘Iron Man’ 3 isn’t going to work out. My schedule is jammed packed and I can’t fit anything else in. The press announced my possible attachment far too soon. I know many of you wanted me to be involved, and I’m so sorry to disappoint you. Hopefully there’ll be another Marvel film in my future. Shane Black and everyone on the IM3 team are really wonderful. I’m very excited to see the film when it comes out."

So that means the role may have already been recast, or the search is on to get one of the other potential actresses. Other names before Chastain resurfaced included Diane Kruger, Gemma Arterton (no thanks) and Isla Fisher (who I would love to see take on a different role like this), but it's not clear if any of those names can take the role yet either. It would be nice to see someone like Rachel McAdams or Amy Adams take on a comic book role too.

For those just joining us, we're betting that this female role would be Maya Hansen, alongside Guy Pearce's Aldrich Killian, who together are the two scientists who create the nanotechnlogy known as Extremis. In the comic, Hansen is the one who ends up selling the technology to terrorists. However, she's also the one who tells Stark about the "theft" of the Extremis technology, just to prove the power of their creation. She already has a history with Stark having studied with him in college, so it stands to reason that she could create a bit of a love triangle with Tony Stark and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), or she could just help progress the plot. Either way, she's supposed to be sexy and every bit as smart as Stark. Any suggestions?

Amy Adams is Lois Lane in Man of Steel... probably not the best choice

As in "Anne Hathaway not the best choice for Catwoman, Mark Ruffalo not the best for Hulk, Heath Ledger not the best for Joker, etc." ? Okay.

Not the best choice to be in two superhero movies in the exact same summer. idiot

with Isla Fisher looking too much like Amy Adams, yeah pretty sure the latter's casting in Man of Steel ruins that. Emphasis on ruin. McAdams already teamed up with RDJ in Holmes so pretty sure that's out to avoid confusion/overexposure. Which leaves Diane Kruger, who can easily pass off being Tony Starks equal in attractiveness, brains, bravado and willpower.

Diane Kruger would work great I think.

Me thinks Diane Kruger would work really well, too!

It really doesn't matter to me. Im just stoked to see the extremis story line. They'll find some gorgeous genius that never was in any of my science classes at M.I.T. (I lied about M.I.T)

I would love to see Jenna Fischer from The Office get a shot at a role like this.

What a shame. She's beautiful AND a great actress.
