Our first look at the new film from P.T. Anderson just came last week in the form of a couple snapshots of the actual 65mm film frames, but now, five years after his last film There Will Be Blood, the writer and director is back with a teaser trailer for The Master. The film is said to follow the relationship between a charismatic intellectual known as "the Master" (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman) whose faith-based organization begins to catch on in America, and a young drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) who becomes his right-hand man. This trailer doesn't give that story up, but it feels like a true P.T. Anderson film. Watch!
Here's the first teaser trailer for P.T. Anderson's The Master, originally posted on YouTube:
Paul Thomas Anderson (the man behind films like Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood) wrote and directed The Master. The film follows Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman) a charismatic leader who creates a new religion in the 1950's and his main disciple (Joaquin Phoenix), an alcoholic drifter named Freddie Sutton who becomes Dodd's closest follower, only to later break away from his teachings. The Master was secretly shown in 70mm at the Aero this month and will hit theaters starting September 14th.

This wasn't at all what I expected nor did I see anything relating to the plot synopsis, but I trust that PTA will deliver.

If anyone's going to help Joaquin Phoenix regain his credibility as an actor, it's PTA. While I wasn't a huge fan of There Will Be Blood (I know - shoot me, right?), I'm in awe always of how much PTA brings to developing characters and infusing raw emotion without the need for verbalization. Needless to say, I am intrigued by this trailer.

You should be shot! How can you not love TWBB? Just kidding... you're entitled to your opinion. Though TWBB is one of my favorites. As you said, it's PTA, we should expect great character development (Daniel Day-Lewis was perfect, but he usually is; also Mark Wahlberg in Boogie Nights delivered a solid performance). Can't wait!

Regarding Pheonix's 'credibility as an actor', I don't think he ever lost it really. If you're referring to his beardy rap period when everyone thought he was going bonkers, you do realise that was for the documentary 'I'm Still Here'.

I am fully aware of this. That said, how many of you have actually watched I'm Still Here?

I've seen it. What is your implication? Who is 'you'? After all of what he's said regarding the film in interviews, it appears he and Casey Affleck attempted to make a mockumentrary about people buying into truth and reality simply because of what they see on television or in a movie. I thought it was hilarious. The fact he took a wild gamble and almost flushed his reputation down the toilet for the sake of doing this makes me like him even more.

I'm not entirely sure what's happening in this trailer but Joaquin Phoenix deserves an Oscar, totally convincing.

After "I'm Still Here" I have this immediate distrust of Phoenix's characters. And I meant that in a good way.

I thought it looked good and interesting, but my mind wasn't necessarily blown. I know, I know, its just an earlier teaser, its just that the early teaser didn't rope me in the way others have. Still have extremely high hopes. I love most of what PTA does. 2012. Boo Yeah.

The score adds a lot to this, just like it did in There Will be Blood. And yes, from what I've seen so far, give Phoenix an Oscar.

If I made a list of my top ten favorite movies of all time... Paul Thomas Anderson would make the list three times, which one of his films at the top spot. I can not wait for this movie.

I think Phoenix went into a rabbit hole and came out the other side an even better actor. That crooked grin and his demeanor in that trailer..awesome! I can not wait to see this.

Phoenix is an amazing actor. Always has been, but I am way in on this.
