Back in June we learned that director Francis Lawrence would follow in the footsteps of Christopher Noland and Brad Bird by shooting some of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire with IMAX cameras. However, we weren't sure just what would be shot on the large film format. Now one of the film's stars, Josh Hutcherson (who plays tribute and Hunger Games victor from District 12, Peeta Mellark), has spoken out about what Lawrence is shooting on IMAX. He's not terrible specific with details, but the way he describes it sounds like it will be something to behold when everyone is seated in IMAX theaters next year.
Hutcherson (who can be seen in Red Dawn right now) told MTV:
"They're shooting, I think, all the stuff in the arena is going to be IMAX. So when you go see it in IMAX, you'll see the regular movie when we're in the Districts and in the Capitol. When you see us go up in the pod in the games, it will open up into IMAX. It will be amazing. It's very cool."
In addition, Hutcherson spoke a bit about the arena scenes shot in Atlanta, and he said, "They actually built a cornucopia in Atlanta that we shot at, and it looks amazing, and the way that the spokes got out, and the way everyone comes up on the pedestals and the water — it looks incredible. I've seen some of the CG renderings that [director] Francis [Lawrence] has worked on, and they look really, really great." The action is pretty intense in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire as far as the book goes, so seeing some of this play out on IMAX screens is going to be cool. I doubt that every scene set in the arena will be in IMAX, but hopefully there will be a good chunk of IMAX footage anyway. The film arrives November 22nd, 2013.
