Kevin Costner to Lead an Adventure with 'The Explorers Guild' Next

Kevin Costner

Kevin Costner is enjoying a nice uptick in his career after the success of "Hatfields & McCoys" and scoring a Nick Fury-esque role in Paramount's Jack Ryan franchise (playing the same role in Without Remorse). Now he's looking to continue that streak, as Deadline reports Costner is developing a multi-platform project called The Explorers Guild that will span multiple books and a feature film in which he'll also star. It's a new adventure series that he hopes will appeal to both the young adult crowd and more mature audiences, and Costner is even bold enough to compare it to famed classics like Arabian Nights as well. More below!

Costner is working on this series with writer and art director Jon Baird as well as artist Rick Ross, and the first book, called The Explorers Guild, Volume One: The Passage to Shambhala, hits shelves in 2014. It follows the title group, an adventurous bunch that travels to places like the Himalayas, the Mongolian desert, and the bottom of the ocean to find answers to life's unknown questions. The first book takes place during World War I, involving a member of the group searching for spiritual enlightenment while another seeks to save his brother's life as they hunt for the mythical city of Shambhala.

Shambhala is the city that protagonist Nathan Drake attempts to locate in the video game Uncharted 2, so we'll see if Costner's project ends up stepping on that potential franchise's toes a bit. Costner is definitely excited about this project but he's not insistent on directing it himself, saying, "I will definitely play one of the characters and provide a voice in the animated series, but I’m content to yield to a great director. This can turn into an example of great original storytelling." There's only so much room at the multiplex for globetrotting adventurers, but with the likelihood of another Indiana Jones movie dwindling by the day, I'm glad someone still wants to bring us some epic adventure stories and we're definitely excited to see how this one ends up. Cool?
