Kevin Costner Will Become an Assassin and Also Mentor Jack Ryan

We recently learned that Thor director Kenneth Branagh has secured not only the director's chair for the upcoming Jack Ryan reboot/prequel, but also the role of the film's main villain. But who will mentor the young agent (played by Chris Pine) during his early days at the CIA? If you've read the headline, you likely know the answer: Deadline reports that hot off his performance in "Hatfields & McCoys," Kevin Costner will take the co-lead with Pine in the still-untitled tentpole for Paramount. But that's not all. Costner is also eyeing a lead as a dying assassin in Luc Besson's forthcoming action thriller Three Days to Kill. Read on!
Reports peg Costner's character in the Jack Ryan movie to be similar to James Earl Jones' Admiral Greer in the Harrison Ford and Alec Baldwin films, but fans will be happy to hear that Costner won't be playing the exact same character, since Jones himself is said to be reprising his role this time out after skipping The Sum of All Fears. It seems only fitting that Costner, once a massive leading man himself, would move into mentor roles at this stage in his career, so let's hope this turns out better than the last time he took one in the Ashton Kutcher rescue swimmer movie The Guardian.
Three Days to Kill hails from Luc Besson's prolific Europacorp, written by Besson and Adi Hasak (From Paris With Love). Costner would play a dying assassin who, while taking on one last mission, hopes to reunite with his daughter before it's too late. It sounds very much in the vein of Liam Neeson's recent action fare, and I'm all for seeing Costner have the same type of career resurgence. Funny note: his character's name is Ethan Renner, which is a mashup of Mission: Impossible lead Ethan Hunt with new franchise star Jeremy Renner. The bad news? McG is in talks to direct. Yikes. No contracts have been signed yet, though, so for now we'll stay optimistic about all of this. Are we going to see a Kevin Costner comeback?
