Brandon Cronenberg's Antiviral

Following in the footsteps of his father, Brandon Cronenberg (son of filmmaker David) made his feature directing debut at Cannes this year with a film titled Antiviral. It's as twisted and sick and unsettling as you'd expect from a Cronenberg, but with its own unique sensibilities. Ever since first seeing this in Cannes (my review) I haven't been able to forget about it, such a weird movie. Thanks to Bleeding Cool, a Canadian trailer has been debuted for the film, and it's a must watch just because I can't wait to see the reactions and responses to this footage. Caleb Landry Jones stars in a bleak world where celebritism has exploded to levels where people will pay money to be infected by nasty diseases swiped from famous people. Have fun!

Here's the first trailer for Brandon Cronenberg's Antiviral, originally debuted on Yahoo Canada:

After becoming infected with the virus that killed superstar Hannah Geist (Sarah Gadon), specialist Syd March (Caleb Landry Jones) must unravel the mystery surrounding her death to save his own life.

If you noticed at the beginning of the trailer, there was a promo for something called The Lucas Clinic, the fictional in-universe clinic where people can go to peruse the latest celebrity diseases and get one injected. The clinic is a main location in the movie and plays a big part of it, which is why I expect to see some kind of viral marketing. In addition to the trailer, that promo has been released as a video promoting the website.

Here's the viral video for The Lucas Clinic from Antiviral, which was also seen in the trailer:

Syd March (Caleb Landry Jones) is an employee at a clinic that sells injections of live viruses harvested from sick celebrities to obsessed fans. Biological communion - for a price. Syd also supplies illegal samples of these viruses to piracy groups, smuggling them from the clinic in his own body. When he becomes infected with the disease that kills super sensation Hannah Geist, Syd becomes a target for collectors and rabid fans. He must unravel the mystery surrounding her death before he suffers the same fate as she did.

Antiviral was written & directed by Brandon Cronenberg, making his feature debut. It also stars Malcolm McDowell, Douglas Smith and Nicholas Campbell. This was filmed mostly up in Toronto last year, and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this summer. IFC Midnight initially picked up Antiviral for release (it could become a cult hit), but hasn't set an actual date yet. We'll keep you updated from here. Thoughts?

So cool!!!! Finally someone has brought back the realistic gore factor to movies. I'm so deadly sick of CGI Blood and CGI creatures and bullshit. I miss the John Carpenter, David Cronenberg, early John Landis effects and this one seems to pull it off. I hope its as twisted and fun as the trailer looks. Looks like Cronenberg passed along the sick gene...but also the genius gene!

At first I thought, "shit, an umbrella company commercial knockoff." Then the actual movie trailer looked awesome. I'm in.

I need to know the name of the person behind that trailer. Extremely clever, the use of sounds and cuts. Anybody got the name of that editor ?

not into it - the premise of people wanting (and paying) to be infected with diseases/viruses that celebrities have (or had) is too laughable (and really repugnant) for me to sit through a movie about it.

Ah the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Thank god for that. And damn it, I love body horror films, but when films come out with a person having coughing attacks it makes me want to rip my chest open. So in essence, this film will irritate me to no end, but I'll be the one sitting closest to the screen watching it in all its glory.
