Must Watch: First Trailer for Shyamalan's 'After Earth' with Will Smith
by Ethan Anderton
December 10, 2012
Source: Yahoo
"Everything on this planet has evolved to kill humans." This week is going to be chock full of trailers for huge releases in 2013, and it looks like the first one out of the gate is M. Night Shyamalan's sci-fi action adventure After Earth starring Will Smith and his rising star son Jaden Smith. This is an international trailer, and the domestic trailer is supposed to be coming later today (it's exactly the same and embedded below), but this still looks pretty interesting. The story finds a father and son from another planet crash landed on a quarantined Earth 1,000 years after humanity was forced to desert it. Now the wildlife has evolved and run wild, making it very dangerous. Is Jaden Smith actually the real star of this film? Watch it!
Here's the first official trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth, originally via Yahoo:
1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime is mankind’s new home. General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the planet to recover their rescue beacon. M. Night Shyamalan directs After Earth wrote it with Stephen Gaghan (Traffic) and Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) and it hits theaters on June 7th, 2013.

Jaden Smith was grown in a vat, and groomed to take over the human race aka the Antichrist, aka author of all sin, aka the devourer, and last but not least: chief of the demons. Brace yourselves for a new age of movie garbage.

now that would be interesting! i wasn't wild about avatar, but to have a cross tie-in between 2 different films .......that just sounds cool.
beevis on Dec 10, 2012
48
sorry chris, while i thought avatar looked good - for me, it was a lousy film - i watched as a rental and had to watch it in multiple sittings - i was so uninterested. that's just me though. and you're right about this will smith film - it looks awful. my point above was only that a cross tie-in between 2 different films would be very interesting......even if it's 2 films i don't like - i'd still like to see how they do it.
beevis on Dec 11, 2012
49
Fair enough...Avatar does seem to have a bit of a polarizing effect. I found it to be a bit a masterpiece in visual storytelling, to be honest. Big fan of a lot of the allegory and environmental/social subtext as well. Cross-overs and tie-ins are fun...but I don't like them for no good reason...Avatar and After Earth aren't owned/produced by the same studio...so no crossover could really happen. Plus there is no need.
Chris Groves on Dec 11, 2012
50
You call it subtext I say there was nothing sub about it .It was right in your face.
wine on Dec 12, 2012
51
Well...it seems like there is no win for losing, half the people say it's shallow and is 'all visuals' nothing more' and then half the people say that there was TOO much commentary and allegory, too many messages and themes. There is a lot to miss or pick up on, depending on your own state of mind and intelligence. If you plan to be pissed about any messages, that is all you will see, if you damn the movie as hollow and nothing but spectacle, you aren't going to notice anything else. There is a reason that film was such a global success, because it was able to get a universal response across cultures and languages. The reaction speaks for itself.

Seems to be like the Trailer gave away the movies big twist? Earth? This guy made one of my fav movies of all time. Unbreakable. Yet, the last 5 movies were so so so so bad. I mean, so SO bad, that I cannot see why anyone would give this guy money?? Hollywoods math is all screwed up, IMO.

The title of the movie is freaking 'After Earth'...I don't think it being Earth is any sort of 'twist'...that speech where he says 'It's earth' likely comes about 1/3rd of the way through the movie, TOPS.

Interested but not impressed. I get the feeling that the trailer only covers the early portion of the movie and there is more to it that just survival. As long as the twist is not Will being a ghost or this being Earth a billion years before our earth, I'll be fine with it.

I think it's gonna be the other way round with the actual movies, meaning Oblivion will be a much better movie than After Earth. Why ?Because I doubt Shymalwhatshisname won't be able to resist putting another idiotic twist at the end.Because it has to have a twist. It's a thing. Also ,Tom Cruise is a better actor than Smiths. And there is Morgan Freeman as well.

I'm hoping the animals are really evolved in this movie. Discovery did an insert way back called "the future is wild" with some pretty bizarre animals evolved. From the trailer you can see typical looking baboons and bongo and a cat that looks like a saber tooth (evolved to look like a prehistoric animal, what?). So I hope some of the other animals they show look way more evolved. Like a crocodile that walks upright like an ape would be sick.

Maybe if you are really against themes of faith in film...then sure, I can see how you'd be put off by a film like that. But you cannot watch the climactic scene in the living room and tell me that it isn't perfectly executed in every way. Great payoff to a great film. The Village is when he started to lose it, when he wanted to make a 'non-genre genre film'...had he played that more openly as a straight drama it would have worked better.

A lot of jaded Movie fans here. Or maybe its just a trend now to bash movies... making yourself feel somehow superior. Seriously. Its one trailer. Its Will Smith. And his son is a decent actor in his own right. Give it a chance. Looks to be a good pop-corn blockbuster. Its not meant to be deep. Its a CGI fireworks display.

anyone watching this trailer should have noticed the signs of intelligent life. Maybe another species colonized the planet after humans evacuated? Or, another species evolved after humans left?
Matthew South on Dec 11, 2012
111
In just 1000 years? What ,some kind of super hyper evolution? If it worked that way in real life we'd be gods by now and we are as far as we know the fastest evolving thing on the planet so far in terms of intelligence. And one would not think that when looking around at all the stupidity in human society.
hater on Dec 11, 2012
112
Evolution is ongoing, and 1000 years is actually a long time for a species to evolve. While we have not changed much in our physical appearance over the course of 1000 years, we have evolved greatly in other ways. We, as an over all species are smarter, living longer, and have evolved past needing things like wisdom teeth, finger and toe nails, excess body hair, an appendix, and gall bladders. Yes, rapid evolution is possible, but to point out something that should be obvious, this is a FICTIONAL movie, therefore, anything is possible, and I feel that this movie will reveal an intelligent species inhabiting the Earth after humans leave it behind.

LOL the negativity towards Will Smith is hilarious on here. Must be a bunch of super dorks or something. The guy has made numerous blockbusters and very good films and is one of the most liked celebrities in the world, fact. The consistency in his box office numbers show this. People like watching him and I do not blame them. He is a very talented individual. Yes he can overact at times but not many people can pretty much hold down a whole movie 90 minutes or more (I am legend) alone off their natural presence. He made one of the greatest sitcoms...some amazing movies and even some good music in his younger days...so keep the hate up while he keeps winning. As for the trailer, it actually looks great. The fact that they told us that it is Earth straight away may mean that they are trying to get away from expecting some sort of cliched twist at the end at it may just be a dramatic finish rather. The trailer looks impressive. Any Will Smith movie is pretty much worth watching and after men in black 3 turned out to be better than expected...this I am looking forward to. Even though it does seem like a film more based towards Jaden smith rather than Will. We'll see how good a teen actor he is I guess.
