Oblivion Trailer

"They won't stop ’till they find me!" Universal has officially revealed the first trailer for Joseph Kosinski's Oblivion, the new futuristic sci-fi starring Tom Cruise as Jack Harper. This is one of those trailers we've been waiting for, since this high concept, big budget Tron Legacy follow-up was shot and is being finished for release in April. This full-length trailer gives us a look at the desolate world and story, also introducing us to Morgan Freeman and Olga Kurylenko, plus Andrea Riseborough as the redhead. This looks visually extraordinary, though I'm not so sure about the rest, but I want to visit there already! Do not miss.

Note: An international version leaked initially, but Universal has now put out the official HD version below.

Watch the first full trailer for Joseph Kosinski's sci-fi Oblivion, now available in high def on Apple:

Kosinski's Oblivion (also known as Horizons) stars Tom Cruise as Jack Harper, plus Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Zoe Bell, Andrea Riseborough, Melissa Leo and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, Jack's soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands. Kosinski developed this for years, with a writing credit with Karl Gajdusek and Michael Arndt. Universal has Oblivion set to open exclusively in IMAX theaters starting April 12th, before then going wide April 19th.

It actually looks pretty good...

Ricardo J C Marques on Dec 8, 2012

amazing visuals and it looks like there's a good story here......i'm in.

beevis on Dec 8, 2012

what story? this looks like another type of Tron template where they use style over substance.

conradthegreat on Dec 8, 2012

no offense, but i'm not gonna explain it. if you don't, like it - that's your opinion.

beevis on Dec 8, 2012

Don't bother explaining....yeah, it's their opinion, but jeez...down on the film already and they haven't even seen the whole thing! Trailer looks intriguing, and it is nice to see Cruise doing two SF films--this and ALL YOU NEED IS KILL. But I'll wait until I see OBLIVION before passing judgement. ....Then again, I liked TRON: LEGACY, so I'm in Kosinski's corner. Hope he can hit this one out of the park as well.

Scopedog on Dec 8, 2012

i understand what you're saying. i'm just tired of responding to the article/trailer and having people try to pick fights over this kind of stuff - seems like that's what more than a few are coming here for nowadays - they don't want to talk movies at all. i really liked this trailer - the striking visuals and potential in the story have me looking forward to if conrad wants to be negative, that's fine with me - his loss. thanks for the reply.

beevis on Dec 8, 2012

It's hip to be a hater .Also maybe we are all a bit jaded by the abundance of material out there.Sooo many movies, comics, books, videogames ect. We don't stop to appreciate ,we hastily consume the next new shiny thing. This movie looks promising. And Tron legacy was pretty decent imo.

tssts on Dec 8, 2012

Speaking of visuals, man I love that clean white look with all the tech. It's like an anti-Blade Runner. Really beautiful.

axalon on Dec 8, 2012

absolutely - i really like seeing big, aged structures like that shot of an NFL looked amazing.

beevis on Dec 8, 2012

By the way, I find your positivity really refreshing. Along with the other people in this thread. Maybe we're getting old fashioned, but I still love suspending my disbelief. Glad to see I'm not the only one!

axalon on Dec 8, 2012

thanks, but i'm certainly human - if someone says something rude to me, i'll give it right back. i don't like doing it though. i come here to talk movies (or books on occasion) and have fun doing it. thanks for the nice reply!

beevis on Dec 8, 2012

beevis, do you live on the east coast? .Maybe we could meet for coffee or a walk on the beach.

tssts on Dec 8, 2012

Very funny. I guess downvoting my comment wasn't enough for you. Also who would not like walking with beevis.Especially after good cup of coffee.

original tssts on Dec 8, 2012

No, you're not the only one....that's what films like this are about--suspending disbelief and just enjoying the ride. This looks to be (hopefully!) a great ride, and the visuals look mind-blowing.

Scopedog on Dec 9, 2012

I think Tron had a great story, but many people skimmed over it as a result of the visuals, and it felt unbalanced to them. They were both there, you just need to pay attention.

OfficialJab on Dec 8, 2012

HAha ur a cracker. Tron did not have a good story nor did it have a good director. It was, IMO, a train wreck.

buzzfunk on Dec 8, 2012

Aren't you cool and edgy like.

tssts on Dec 8, 2012

Sorry, I'm a cracker? Oh. Anyways, for story, they seriously should have anyone at 'a man is trapped inside a virtual space he created'. Adding the clone, the longlost son, and self-created lifeforms, and there isn't much reason to dislike the story if you enjoy scifi-fantasy. Do you maybe mean the dialogue? It's a bit flimsy. And Kosinski may not be for everyone, but he's exceptional at framing shots and designing sets. And particularly at incorporating music into the narrative and action, instead of just playing music in the background. cough

OfficialJab on Dec 8, 2012

Its not like i want movies to suck. I love movies. But Tron showed that beyond the commercial making aspect of the director, he does not understand what narrative means. Tron sounded and looked ok. I know who scores Oblivion and he continues to choose rather unique musicians instead of typical composers (which i like). But im just so so tired these days of people getting wow'd by loud and nice visuals without substance. Tron was shallow. So my own plateau of 'good' movies is vastly different then for some people. To say tron was a good movie, means people are ok with mediocre film making these days. Hope this movie proves me wrong and he can pull something decent off.

buzzfunk on Dec 9, 2012

No, they COULD have gotten away with many audiences by skimping on the story, but they didn't. They didn't need to add CLU, or the iso's, or eccentric characters like Castor. They did it so that the characters would have weight instead of just being glowing people. In a lot of movies that are heavily stylized, the central criticism is that 'there's no story', or at least 'the story sucks'. They can and do coexist in Tron. Sucker Punch also springs to mind - I saw so many people say it had no story, when it was practically drowning in an story, it just wasn't presented through dialogue. Avatar? Not as much. There was a story there, but it wasn't very weighty. I hope Avatar 2 has a bit more meat to it.

OfficialJab on Dec 9, 2012

Which is why they've hired another writer for the sequel XD

Ryan on Dec 9, 2012

I'm in too. I'm into you πŸ˜‰

tssts on Dec 9, 2012

beevis on Dec 9, 2012

Pretending to be somebody else just to make them look like they are gay means you are not grown up.Just man up and insult me under your original nickname.

original tssts on Dec 9, 2012

The joke is getting old dude. I'm trying to figure out what exactly hit your nerve in my comments that you try to make me look like I need some sweet beevis love. Was it the "you are so cool and edgy like" or the other one implying you're basically a hipster douchebag or just a plain old douchebag?

original tssts on Dec 9, 2012

you're both the same person

beevis on Dec 9, 2012

No problem,I'm just waiting for him to start pretending he's "original tssts" too. It was kinda funny but got old really fast. It's the interwebs. Maybe I should setup an actual profile and not use disposable ones .

original tssts on Dec 9, 2012

maybe you should stick with 1 account.

beevis on Dec 9, 2012

29 we go again..just like predicted ,now you are pretending to be "original tssts" are really boring dude..

tssts on Dec 9, 2012

wierd.....and flagged.

beevis on Dec 9, 2012

FYI it's that asshole again.. I'm not going to post anything using tssts in the nickname after this..just so you know the douchebag is still at it..some people really need to get a life...good luck..

tssts on Dec 9, 2012

your both the same person. LOL

beevis on Dec 9, 2012

WTF are you babbling about? dave - seriously....are you crazy? you seem so fixated on my being on this site. i never had anyone follow me around the way you do.......and THAT makes you seem a little insane or very immature. and you're the troll - not me...... i don't post the kind of spam you're putting up here now. btw - how many bogus, unregistered accounts are you posting with? 5? 6?....more? why not act like an adult and register just one? anyway - you're nonsense is always good for a laugh.

beevis on Dec 9, 2012

Agreed. Looks intriguing. Not sure what the poster means by "Tron Template."

PBGray on Dec 9, 2012

i guess it means this movie is going to follow a broad outline of the tron film - i don't see that at all, though.

beevis on Dec 9, 2012

Agree 100%. It looks great After watching that maybe Kosinski should be considered for the new Star Wars films

rocky728 on Dec 10, 2012

i think so - i saw another trailer on tv last night that had brief moments of cruise flying that little ship was pretty cool. when i saw that, i immediately thought he might be a good choice for SW.

bat0u on Dec 8, 2012

This link worked. Thanks.... Yeah, my interest is definitely piqued...might be worth checking out. Didn't have a problem with Cruise's past SF films (MINORITY REPORT, WAR OF THE WORLDS), and this and the upcoming ALL YOU NEED IS KILL could be worth seeing.

Scopedog on Dec 8, 2012

I was really excited for this at first. The concept art looked fantastic and epic, yet for some reason I felt a little let down after watching this trailer.

AySpergs362 on Dec 8, 2012

Copyright garbage. Not like I'm watching the trailer to see if I might like to PAY to see the movie when it gets released. Yeah.

Will on Dec 8, 2012

Yeah I'm in. Cruise looks to be really into this character...and for some strange reason I really liked the scene where he was pulled down, the way his head hit the floor seemed legitimate...I like realistic falls for some odd reason.

Xerxexx on Dec 8, 2012

Hell, with this and ALL YOU NEED IS KILL for 2014, Cruise should be hitting a double when it comes to SF!

Scopedog on Dec 9, 2012

I know right! The guy is great in sci-fi settings. Recently re-watched Vanilla Sky and Minority Report two great and two very different movies.

Xerxexx on Dec 9, 2012

Jack Reacher now Jack Harper... Also how does Tom Cruise still look the same and he is 50+ years old?

Ryan Browne on Dec 8, 2012

He cleaned his thetan.

Good living. Or some anti-aging tech we know nothing about. πŸ˜‰

Vaegs on Dec 8, 2012

This could be a prequel to WALL-E!!!

DAVIDPD on Dec 8, 2012

you don't like Wall-E, funny boy?

Bob on Dec 9, 2012

Quite the contrary. But you must admit. The trailer bares a surprising similarity to WALL-E's earth. Tom Cruise's character is even monitoring bots whose function is similar to that of WALL-Es. The aesthetic is also similar in that white seems to be in vogue. Just and observation that attempted humor. πŸ˜‰

DAVIDPD on Dec 9, 2012

The trailer revealed a lot. Let's hope there are more surprises. I don't think I'm going to watch any more trailers that come out. I feel like I've seen enough to be excited

Dan W on Dec 8, 2012

they only showed small snippets of action, i bet they have a ton more

me on Dec 9, 2012

No clue about the twist but just watching that trailer makes me think its all about the aliens actually having won the war and Cruises character figures out his reality is Matrix like......

MONAL on Dec 8, 2012

Do film companies release a trailer, allow an initial reaction from it and then re-edit it a little based on what people are saying? I'm curious to know that the trailer was released and then pulled today, it seems to happen a lot.

Carpola on Dec 8, 2012

Typically, the film is already filmed, and is in post production for visual effects. So they will send the entire film to different trailer making companies without completed visual effects. They watch the entire movie and edit a trailer to the movie, send it to the company who approves it and they officially release the trailer. To just redit the trailer after a reaction would take a very long time to do and just create harder work for the trailer company considering all the scenes are not completed.

BADTDK on Dec 8, 2012

Cheers, I thought they'd get some last minute edits or cut something together with what they had. I just find it weird that trailers get pulled so quickly when they are released by the studios. Do they get leaked by the editors early?

Carpola on Dec 8, 2012

Seriously... way too much in the trailer. They had me after a minute, after 2 I stopped watching or I'd just wait for the DVD. This 2:30 "trailer" BS has to end...

Akirakorn on Dec 8, 2012

How does a 45 year old Jack Harper have memories of a 60 year old Earth?

H1 on Dec 8, 2012

..and that's what we call a motivation to see the movie...

original tssts on Dec 8, 2012

grimjob on Dec 8, 2012

Wow I'm never gonna complain about teasers again. I forgot how I feel when they show a little too much in the first trailer. Movie looks promising though.

si1ver on Dec 8, 2012

WOW! this trailer made my day! GREAT! AMAZING!

Bob on Dec 9, 2012

I wish Cruise would change his look up a bit. Some designer stubble, color his hair (Collateral). Something. Otherwise I just see Tom Cruise in another movie, not a new character he's playing.

castingcouch on Dec 9, 2012

This is not a remake, this is not a prequel, this is not a sequel and people might relate this to past apocalyptic or sci fi movies but it’s something different I’m definitely going to see this

korbindallis on Dec 9, 2012

EXACTLY!! Right on! For those points alone this film should be worth checking out...I mean, there's moans and groans about how there needs to be "original" material, and when something comes out that is clearly that, the haters still aren't satisfied. Yeeesh....

Scopedog on Dec 9, 2012

Haters have a choice! get the f**k out of here right now.nobody needs your sick ideas.

when did sci-fi ever leave?

beevis on Dec 9, 2012

Yeah, this is clearly an attack on me, this post should be deleted. Lol. And, me "following you around"? Ohno, I just comment on you posting 30++ comments on a movie seems a bit odd, and then you showed of all your master suppression techniques. You have 14 comments on this one, unless some of the posts deleted are yours, and almost of your posts are you complaining about other people posting. Hmmm. I have only posted on 1 account, and I am the only one who posts under this. On the other hand, you are not the only one who posts on yours. This explains much. You claiming to be a psychiatrist, was it? And handing out a diagnosis of me being insane since I point out you post a bit much defensive-spam is not very professional, now is it? And accusing me for having more than 1 account is a bit....what is the word? Paranoid.

David Banner on Dec 11, 2012

dave - i asked a question in regards to your post.....and look how you respond....... THAT is mentally unstable.

beevis on Dec 11, 2012

Not really honey, just keeping it all on 1 page and not taking it to a new thread, like others do. But maybe you have a point, or one of you are confused and I should have replied further up, to the post where you blame the weight of the world on me. You know what? I'll repost further up, so you don't confuse each other. Must be hard to follow all the posts you two attack.

David Banner on Dec 11, 2012

dave - i asked you a simple question about why you feel sci-fi is "back" ....instead of all your drama - why not answer the question? and still, you spam on about about nothing.

beevis on Dec 11, 2012

I'm not on your couch dude, no one here is. You claiming to be the adult over all who post here, maybe you(two) should just drop it. We'll throw you a parade.

David Banner on Dec 11, 2012

I love Tom and I'll be catching this when it comes out but I'd echo some other posters that the trailer seemed too long. I've just watched it at work without any sound and even I stopped it after 2.00 mins because it looked like it was too long.

Payne by name on Dec 10, 2012

Visualy this looks quite well, but I am not impresed with the story. It seems preaty streat forward, just like any other apocalyptic movie. Hope I am wrong tho...

D6 on Dec 10, 2012

why do I get a Wall:E vibe from this...?

tonker on Dec 11, 2012

I want to like this, but I just..... don't. Am I alone in thinking Kosinski's last effort Tron: Legacy was mildly mediocre at best? All though Tom Cruise looks on point with the material he's been given.
