Natalie Portman Courted to Play Jackie Kennedy Onassis in 'Jackie'

September 28, 2012

Jackie Kennedy / Natalie Portman

Minka Kelly is taking the role of Jackie Kennedy Onassis in Lee Daniels' generation spanning drama The Butler, but a bigger name actress is looking to step into the role for a lead role in the biopic Jackie. Though Rachel Weisz was once going to lead the project with ex-husband Darren Aronofsky at the helm, the director left the project after splitting with his wife and Weisz fell away from the project as well. Now Deadline reports another Aronofsky collaborator is circling the role as Natalie Portman is being courted by Fox Searchlight to take play Jackie in the film chronicling her life after the assassination of her husband JFK.

However, her involvement is contingent on who ends up directing. After starring in Black Swan for Aronofsky, maybe the director can return to the project after finishing Noah. Either way, a solid director should come along for Portman at some point. The script from Noah Oppenheim even caught the attention of Steven Spielberg a couple years ago, so it has to be one hell of a screenplay. For now the project is still in its infancy, but with Portman circling, it shouldn't be too hard to get some fresh eyes on the project and get if off the ground before too long. Sound good?

Natalie Portman is a Horrible choice for the role. I would have tried to get Rachel Weisz back, who not only looks the part but can bring the range and complexity necessary for the role. I smell disaster here.
