Nolan is NOT Converting 'The Dark Knight Rises' to 3D - April Fools!

The Legend Ends. You thought it wasn't possible, now it's happening. Warner Bros has announced that The Dark Knight Rises will also be released in RealD and Dolby Digital 3D theatres simultaneously with its worldwide release in conventional and IMAX theatres starting July 20th this summer. The epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy is being post-converted by Burbank's Stereo D LLC, the same company that was most recently in charge of converting Titanic for James Cameron. The news comes confirmed from NolanFans today, press release and all, stating it's still on schedule to hit theaters by July.
The conversion will preserve the immense detail in the original IMAX footage, which will also be converted to 3D by Stereo D. "We're thrilled to be working with Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas and Warner Bros. to deliver one of the year's biggest films in three dimensions," added Lirpa Sloof, President & Chairman of Stereo D. "Chris has proven to be an immensely talented director. He has the vision and skills to make an immersive blockbuster film that is truly larger than life. We're excited to be a key ingredient in what will surely be the biggest film this side of April." Sounds like they're really going all out, but this movie certainly deserves all the grandeur it can get. Plus, there's something special about the day this news was announced.
Everyone knows I'm not a big fan of 3D and was excited just to see Nolan shoot upwards of an hour of The Dark Knight Rises in IMAX, but now we'll have the chance to experience this snowy, epic finale in the "third dimension." Knowing how incredible Nolan's movies are, and how amazing of a cinematographer Wally Pfister is, I don't think we have anything to be worried about. But I'll probably still choose to see this first in 2D on opening night. Christian Bale returns as Batman, and is joined by Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Caine. The Fire Rises in theaters this July.
UPDATE: As most of you figured out, this was just an April Fools joke. Thank you to Alex of NolanFans for organizing and writing the press release. We thought we'd have a little fun, because obviously everyone is very excited for The Dark Knight Rises, but especially because we know there's absolutely no way Chris or Wally would ever let this go 3D. Hope we didn't make too many of you jump! Or maybe we hope we did. 🙂

April Fools is like the flu - people can only catch it once and are on their guard after they do so it's most effective at the start of the Winter.

even if this was real who gives a shit if they made it 3d. There are always 2d showings and its not like 3d makes a movie bad it literally just makes it 3d. The only thing you could possibly complain about is having to pay a whole 3 dollars more. Im not a cheap bastard and i like 3d

Or.... Maybe WB just wants to capitalize on the higher ticket price of 3D films pushing the box office take higher withou additional ticket sales.

Wow... I'm not sure what's more disheartening... Hearing about this little Batman joke while pulling a 12 hour shift at 'Stereo D' today... OR... seeing all the irrational and unmitigated hateful comments directed toward 3D films that nobody is forcing anyone to spend money on.  Y'know what... On behalf of hard-working, under-appreciated visual effects artists everywhere... thanks a lot internet... thanks.  Â
Chris P. O'Connell on Apr 2, 2012

That nobody is forcing anyone to spend money on? I wish that were the case. Not only are cinemas forcing it down our throats (it wouldn't be the first time that my options were "3D or fuck off") but there's now a high probability that cinemas will raise the price of 2D films so 3D wouldn't be pricier. Most of the audience do not want 3D and yet it is almost impossible to escape. I have no disrespect for any hard work that these visual effects artists are doing. In fact I admire their hard work, but I could care less about their result. The fact that there was probably a hardworking crew of people on either Transformers-film does not justify its existence or excuse its lack of quality.Â

1. OK, when people "could care less" about a thing, they don't waste energy hating on it... hence the meaning of "could care less".  ...BUT...  2. More importantly... where exactly are these places where no 2D version of a film are offered on any screens?  I keep hearing about them, but nobody ever gives me a straight answer as to where these option-deprived places actually are.Â
Chris P. O'Connell on Apr 2, 2012

1. I wouldn't want to defend the hate-machine that the internet can be, but I understand a more than apathetic stance when fans feel cheated. I think whatever (reasonable) outrage you might read on the internet is more directed towards the fact that studios are trying to force 3D on the audience and mostly for their own gain. If it's an artistic choice of the director, alright fine. But even then the audience is allowed to express its discontent if that's what it brings them. 2. UGC in Brussels, Belgium.

... hardly true. In the country where I live, if the film is on 3D there's only a limited window, if any, to watch the film in 2D and without a stupid dubbed version. So yes, any film that is presented in 3D will most likely mean I won't get to see it because of money hungry studio execs...
Yahzee on Apr 2, 2012

I already knew it was false, because Nolan hasn't used 3D and hes not the type of director to use it, let alone convert it when filming is already complete. He would know that it would just look plane stupid. Imax footage is waaaaayyy better than 3D anyway.
