"What makes you carry on, Oscar?" You've heard all about it, how weird and wacky it is, how unbelievably talented Denis Lavant is, now it's time to go see it. Despite already opening in theaters (New York only for now) earlier this week, Indomina has finally put out the actual US trailer for Leos Carax's Holy Motors. The movie stars French actor Denis Lavant in a multitude of roles, traveling by white limousine to various performances around Paris. I first saw this in Cannes and it's an utterly fascinating metaphorical look at the art of "performing" in life. Kylie Minogue also appears, as does Eva Mendes, right up front and center.
Here's the newly released US trailer for Leos Carax's Holy Motors, in high def from Apple:
Holy Motors follows an individual named Monsieur Oscar (Denis Lavant), a mysterious person who travels around playing different characters. "He is, in turn, captain of industry, assassin, beggar, monster, family man… But where is his true home, his family, his rest?" This is the first film from French director Leos Carax since 1999; his past work includes Boy Meets Girl, Bad Blood (Mauvais sang), The Lovers on the Bridge and Pola X. Some may recognize Denis Lavant from Carax's segment of the triptych Tokyo. After premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, Holy Motors was picked up by Indomina Releasing, who will release this limited on October 17th. It's also still playing at numerous film festivals. See this as soon as you can!

I saw this film at NYFF. It is fantastic. Odd, and a complete essay on actors and filmmaking, this film made me laugh out loud so many times, I was almost crying. Refreshing and completely original. At the panel, when Leos Carax, was asked why he made the film, he responds: "Um, well. I dont know." And that's it. It is a seriously brilliant movie

I found Holy Motors a bit hit-and-miss, some segments were amazing, breath-taking, whilst others were just so extremely bizarre they pushed me away. Still it is rare we get a film this original, so everybody should go see it.
