As Comic-Con 2012 gets underway, one of the con's biggest most recent stars has locked down a casting role in a non-geek property. According to Deadline, Olivia Wilde, who wowed the nerd crowd with her performance in the otherwise mediocre Cowboys & Aliens, has signed on with Safety Not Guaranteed star Jake M. Johnson, Anna Kendrick, and Office Space's Ron Livingston in a comedy called Drinking Buddies. It's an indie improv comedy from director Joe Swanberg, who has helmed mumblecore flicks like Hannah Take The Stairs and Alexander The Last and even slipped into the horror genre with V/H/S.
The story follows a guy, played by Livingston, who has a flirtatious friendship with a girl that ends up falling apart. There's no word yet on the roles that Wilde, Kendrick, and Johnson would play, but it seems that Wilde is more age-appropriate for Livingston than Kendrick, so we'll see how the casting shakes out. All of these actors are fast-talkers and pretty quick on their feet, so seeing how they interact in a movie that's mostly improvised should be a lot of fun. Production starts in Chicago later this summer, and I'm guessing filming will happen fairly quickly considering that Swanberg directed a shocking six feature films in 2011 alone. We'll be keeping our eyes on this one for sure.
