Potential Villain Hierarchy & Iron Patriot Armor Details for 'Iron Man 3'

Iron Patriot

Now that Iron Man 3 is in production in North Carolina, there's going to be a lot of scoops coming out of the woodwork about the story, villains and more. We've already learned that Jon Favreau is returning as Happy Hogan and apparently another villain has been added to the mix in the form of Ashley Hamilton playing Firepower, with Ben Kingsley playing some sort of unknown villain (that is reportedly not Mandarin) and James Badge Dale as Eric Savin who may or may not be another villain called Coldblood. But now we have word on the actual villain hierarchy, and also on just what one of them might be wearing.

All right, now this is all a bit complicated, but some of the thoughts we've had previously about how the Extremis storyline and some of these villains (who aren't part of that comic book story on which this script is loosely based) might all tie together seem to be true. Latino Review is saying that Kingsley will be playing Mandarin, however, he is not exactly the main villain, and is more of the instigator of chaos by backing Aldrich Killian, the role played by Guy Pearce, who uses Mandarin's resources to create the new breed of nanotechnology equipped super soldiers (that's the Extremis storyline). But what about those other two villains? Be aware that there might be some spoilers from here on out, so keep reading at your own risk.

Well, as we hypothesized, it seems that James Badge Dale and Ashley Hamilton will play two of these new super soldiers. In fact, this has been confirmed by SuperheroHype learning that the Iron Patriot armor (read about the comic mythology behind that right here) makes an appearance in Iron Man 3. Moreover, The Superficial has snagged a blurry shot of the armor on set, and revealed that it's actually James Badge Dale under the armor, which seems to have some War Machine traits as well  (which isn't surprising since that's what the government wanted to do with the suit in Iron Man 2). So with that information, it seems pretty clear that Coldblood and Firepower will likely be secondary villains doing Mandarin and Killian's dirty work to fight Tony Stark as Iron Man, but not very similar to their comic book iterations at all.

Now, most of this is speculation, but with information coming from Latino Review, we think this villain hierarchy has been figured out pretty well. In fact, these guys actually got word on Loki being the villain in The Avengers (which was denied by Marvel and Tom Hiddleston) and they also heard about Thanos being involved somehow way back before anyone had heard rumors about the end credits scene. Obviously they have a pretty solid source in the know, so we're going to trust what they say for now. The villain situation seemed crowded at first, but it sounds like Shane Black has everything in check, and this might be a set-up for something bigger with Mandarin for another sequel, or maybe even for The Avengers 2. Stay tuned.

Will they have to explain from now on why Stark doesn't just call the rest of his Avengers buddies when new villains show up? 🙂

2

Yes they will have to explain why the arrogant Ironman who thinks he can take on the world by himself is not calling his friends.......

Same thoughts.  At least Hulk.

They said that Tony's back will be against the wall, he won't be able to call the other Avengers, he won't be able to call for help. It'll be his battle, his demons.

Well At the end of the avengers Nick Fury specifically stated, "I'm not currently tracking their whereabouts, i think they deserve a legal absence" which could explain that the avengers(probably not including the interactions between, tony and bruce, and natasha and Barton) will not really stay in contact with each other. Plus not to mention Tony likes to work alone, if you remember well before he invented the new element he didn't want to "join your[Nick Fury's] super secret boy band"

He actually said "leave of absense".

Iron Monger and Iron whiplash were basically the same and quite banal. Iron Patriot has promise as.long as he isn't just the iron monger repainted. Viva El Latino Review!

I don't mean to sounds like an ignoramus but is Jon Favreau returning as director? if not then does anyone know who will be directing?

HazedMind on May 30, 2012

Shane Black is directing, and if you have seen Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with Downey Jr. and Kilmer, directed by Black, you need to.

Thor cant show up because hes In asgard, Hulk will probably hiding somewhere, and he will call for help, but in the form of War Machine

Don Cheadle is on IMDB as being part of the cast so he will at least get a cameo..... Mark Ruffalo however keeps slipping in and out of the list so nobody has any real proof he will cameo or not.....

but.... The best thing about Iron Patriot is that he is Norman Osborn and that's not who's gunna be in the suit =(

Shouldn't they tie that in with the new Spider-Man franchise?! Hint for the Spider-Man to appear on The Avengers 2? I would love to see Andrew Garfield with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo.

Soooooooo how can they even have an Iron Patriot w/o Osborn? Will they be bringing back Willem DaFoe? Skrull Invasion? Civil War? If not the Iron Patriot armor is just there to piss me off.

i wish i knew dude. the only thing that made the character so awesome (besides the look of his suit) was that a well known marvel maniac was behind the helm. And since Marvel dosn't own the rights to spiderman my guess is its just going to be some random crazy guy instead. the other thing that sucks about them not owning Spiderman is that he is the one who ends up beating Thanos before he gets the Infinity gauntlet. which would have been an AMAZING way for the Avengers 2 to end. SUCKS!

DoomCanoe on Jun 2, 2012

Bring back Terrance Howard!

Solo_Calrissian on May 30, 2012

26

Amen.

Faceman on May 30, 2012

27

Don Cheadle was a better Rhodey. Terrance had too much of a baby face and was not the serious military man James Rhodes/War Machine is. Don Cheadle filled that role perfectly.

AmericanSon on May 30, 2012

28

True, but still, Howard was meant to be War Machine, Favrou had casted him because he himself saw him playing War Machine in a potential sequel. Plus, Terrance had better chemistry with Robert as best friends.

Faceman on May 30, 2012

29

Don Cheadle, I think, is a crap war machine, everytime he shows up I just want Tony to shoot him in the face.. and at the end of IM2 when he appeared on the roof, and was like "get a roof" I wanted him to be thrown off the roof and splattered among the pavement like a piece of modern art. God that character is so boring, annoying, pointless, just... grrrr

Terrance Howard sucks.  Don Cheadle does not.

Chiroptera Exsanguination on May 30, 2012

31

Howard had waaaaay better chemistry with Downey than Cheadle and Iron Man was a much better movie than pt 2.  Cheadle IMO is a much better actor, but Howard was there first, displayed better chemistry and nothing bothers me more than non-reboots with new actors playing an existing character.

Here we go again: Meh.

33

Ok. I may be way off. But I thought iron patriot didn't appear until after civil war and secret invasion, both of which happened AFTER infinity gauntlet (if that is how thanos ties in) I may be wrong. But it seems like marve is about to skip a ton of content. But it is the third in the franchise. Historically the third movies do mess some things up. Any other comic followers out there that can clear my time line up?

Taurinh on May 30, 2012

34

You're right, but this is a different Marvel universe, and because they have over 60 years of material to draw from, the folks who write the films can change things up. (Like how Cap was in the Avengers from the start instead of being found by the Avengers in ice like he was in the comics

Akkratte on May 30, 2012

and Norman Osborn is spiderman which Sony does not wish to give up.....

Jericho on May 31, 2012

For me this iron man must defeat iron man 2 not himself only. Thats complicated situation but : First Shane Black Know Exactly why third spiderman not was cool as two pervious predecessors Two He " DELIBERATE " choose this many villains then Wait for Surprisingly Spectacular Grand Ironman

I'm very disappointed that there won't be any more of the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline in the series. I always thought it was a very defining story arc for Tony/IM, and the brief display of alcoholism in IM2 was wasted by explaining it away as his coping mechanism for his impending death.

Ben Kingsley playing a chinese guy? Come on!
