Rian Johnson Crashes the Midnight of 'Looper' as an Arclight Usher

Rian Johnson Arclight

This is just plain awesome. As we've already mentioned many times, Rian Johnson's original, brilliant new sci-fi Looper is now playing in theaters. Anticipation has been building for years (our first post on this was in August of 2008), and now it's out in nearly 3000 theaters. The world famous Arclight in Hollywood runs midnight screenings almost every single Friday, and so for the very first midnight showing of Looper, Rian dressed up as an Arclight usher and introduced the show - without ever identifying himself. Co-star Noah Segan captured a photo on Twitter, and a video of his midnight intro has hit the web as well. See it below!

Here's the video, which just shows Rian giving the usual intro before the film at its first midnight show. This video comes straight from the official Looper tumblr, via SlashFilm today. It's a fun behind-the-scenes look:

Actor Noah Segan's tweet stated: "Bossman @RCJohnso pranked the midnight screening of @LooperMovie, dressing up as an usher and intro'ing. Video coming." And there is the video to watch above (on Rian's Vimeo)! This was just a cool idea, especially for the filmmaker himself to go in like this and not even say anything. I've heard of directors sneaking in and hiding out during opening day showings, to see/hear the audience, and just make a surprise appearance. I'm a huge fan of Rian Johnson, both as a person/cinephile, and as a filmmaker/storyteller. Similar to that photo of the line for The Master in 70mm, this is just one of those stories that makes me smile and feel great about cinema again. Most of all, I think I'm happiest seeing a nearly-sold-out midnight crowd in that video. Here's to hoping Looper is a box office success! Sound Off.
