Empires of the Deep

"When Myth and Legend collide, the War of the Abyss begins." After the success of Avatar in China, the country when nuts for 3D cinema, creating the buzzed-about 3D Sex And Zen. Following in the footsteps of those two, another crazy creation was this, a $100 $130 million 3D underwater epic called Empires of the Deep. The project was apparently a huge disaster, kept running over its budget, losing stars, and in the end was made, but not to great results. The Playlist has found the first trailer and it's rather trippy and epic and crazy, to say the least. Olga Kurylenko stars as a mermaid, joined by Steve Polites and Maxx Maulion.

Here's the official trailer for Michael French's Empires of the Deep, found on Twitch via The Playlist:

For thousand of years, legends of beautiful mermaids have enchanted people from all over the globe. Their fascinating and mysterious world has always captured our imagination. What secrets lurk beneath the depths? And why do beautiful mermaids seduce human men? Set in a mythical world, Empires of the Deep is the story of an unlikely love story between a young human and a mermaid. The movie was directed by (or the person who receives the credit is) Michael French (Heart of a Dragon), from a screenplay by Randall Frakes (Blowback, Stealing Candy) based on a story by Jiang Hongyu. As others have said, it's unlikely this will ever get a theatrical release in the US, but it'll probably make its way over here in some form eventually.

everything seems very dreamlike to me.....but, aside from some striking visuals (and those were hit-and-miss) this doesn't look like it'd be very good.

It's so bad that the film-hipsters would love it. I smell cult-classic.

It might actually be a cult classic since nobody seems to have proclaimed it to be one before it even came out...

New Power Rangers movie?

Jerry Camp on Oct 24, 2012

39

Seriously? This movie costs 130 US million dollars to make? I find it hard to believe. Transformers part 1 were somewhat lesser / costs the same to make but it had superb special effects far greater than this...

That, ladies & gentlemen, is what we here in the industry call a 'cluster fuck!'

I love that out of all the general awfulness this movie seems to be full of, they couldn't even pick a decent, non-cheesy font
