Sharlto Copley Also Joining Disney's 'Maleficent' with Angelina Jolie

Man, Sharlto Copley has been nabbing some good roles recently. He was just confirmed to star as the villain in Spike Lee's Oldoy remake, and is also lining up a spot in some horror-thriller called Open Grave, from the guy who directed Apollo 18. Now Deadline says he's also in negotiations to star as the male lead, big role, in Disney's Maleficent movie, that Angelina Jolie is starring in with production designer-turned-director Robert Stromberg. Copley is really going all out, with a major lead in a Disney movie? He's also got roles in two big sci-fi projects: Europa (first look here) plus Neill Blomkamp's Elysium, already in the can.
According to Deadline's report, Sharlto Copley will be playing King Stefan, the lead opposite Angelina Jolie who plays evil fairy Maleficent. Stefan is the father of Princess Aurora, who is cursed in the Sleeping Beauty story, which this tells a twisted new take on (kind of like how Oz The Great and Powerful is the reverse of that story). Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland, Snow White and the Huntsman, Oz: The Great and Powerful) is producing Maleficent, and production is supposed to start this summer, as Disney has already scheduled it for release in 2014. We'll definitely keep you updated, as it sounds like casting and production is starting to come together. And Copley is a very unique choice for a lead in this, I'm intrigued. Thoughts?

Sharlto is too good for Maleficent.

I think he'll do fine as the king. This is the first time the animated Disney feature is being turned into a twisted, live-action version, so any actors/actresses will sit fine for me--EXCEPT John Malkovich!! Blech! He was terrible in Earagon. I think that's one reason that movie bombed.
