'The Hobbit' Star Martin Freeman is Silent in 'The Girl is Mime' Short
There's no better time to promote a short film when the star is getting ready to hit the big screen in one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. Martin Freeman stars in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (and the forthcoming two sequels) as Bilbo Baggins, but we're going to highlight a more quiet, but no less adventurous performance from the British actor. Director Tim Bunn landed Freeman to star in his short film The Girl is Mime, which he made for the 48 Hour Film Contest. The six-minute film follows Freeman as a mime who is being interrogated by the police as the top suspect for the murder of his wife. Watch it!
Here's Tim Bunn's short film The Girl is Mime starring Martin Freeman via THR:
Freeman committed to the film without knowing that he had to play a mime, but Freeman came through even better than the filmmakers had dreamed. Bunn says, "Ultimately, he was the most experienced and most professional person on set - and his performance makes the film what it is. Much of the little performances nuances for Clive [the mime] weren't in the script, they were just things he was throwing in to the very brief rehearsals we did before shooting a scene." What's even more impressive is how focused Freeman was at the time as Bunn explains, "He'd literally just found out (the day before, I believe) that he was going to play Bilbo." Whew, what a whirlwind, and this is such a fantastic short. Pretty great, right?
That was fantastic, and good on them for getting Freeman. The 48 Hour Film project is pretty much for low budget student films so grabbing a star like Freeman is quite huge.
