'The Killing' Star Joel Kinnaman Offered Lead in 'RoboCop' Remake

RoboCop / Joel Kinnaman

After hearing that Russell Crowe was potentially heading into law enforcement as RoboCop, it was clear that the remake from Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) was finally moving forward, but the Robin Hood and Gladiator star ultimately was not involved with the project. Now it appears we know who will don the metal suit as Deadline reports MGM has made an offer to Joel Kinnaman, star of the AMC drama series "The Killing" to take the lead role Peter Weller played in the original 1987 film. While this isn't a done deal yet, an up and coming actor like Kinnaman likely won't turn down what will be a breakthrough role on the screen.

Kinnaman currently has a supporting role in Safe House with Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington. The film's director, Daniel Espinosa, worked with Kinnaman on the Swedish film Snabba Cash (which is also supposed to be remade), and it sounds like putting him in a high profile action thriller gave him the right amount of attention to really make waves on the big screen. The only downside is that we likely won't see much of Kinnaman's face in RoboCop for too long, but it should still be a big breakthrough for the actor whose star has risen very quickly in a short amount of time. Stay tuned as more info becomes available.

"The only downside is that we likely won't see much of Kinnaman's face in RoboCop for too long" - The only downside? I think the fact that this is being remade in the first place is the downside.

All I'm concerned about is the story and how robocop will be redesigned for this new vision... I don't think it will capture the magic the first robocop did.

If it doesn't have a toxic waste scene in it I'll probably punch myself in the ovary in anger and frustration.

Russell Crowe? LOL, now that would have been terrible casting. Needless to say, this remake is a bad idea all around. The original RoboCop is iconic and it's like remaking Jaws or Star Wars or something as classic, unique. This is just another completely unnecessary remake.
