'Tron: Legacy' Sequel on the Fast Track at Disney with a New Writer

Tron: Legacy

Though it was assumed a third film in the Tron franchise would arrive after the moderate success of Tron: Legacy, a sequel that arrived 28 years after the first innovative sci-fi film, development has been stagnant. But now word is coming from Heat Vision that Disney has a "renewed urgency" to get what is currently only called Tron 3 off the ground thanks to new studio head Alan Horn. Though reviews have been mixed on Tron: Legacy, the film grossed over $400 million worldwide so that's enough for Disney to get the franchise back on track. And to get the sequel moving, writer Jesse Tigutow has been hired to write a new draft.

Wigutow has been around for a little while (he wrote the adaptation of Eragon), but more recently he's been pretty busy with an adaptation of Peter and the Starcatchers also at Disney (with Gary Ross directing) and he also worked on the gestating remake of The Crow. David DiGilio wrote the first draft of the script and Joseph Kosinski is still attached to direct. Though it's been a couple years since Tron: Legacy hit theaters, fans have had their thirst quenched with the Disney XD series "Tron: Uprising," which has been a pretty cool bridge between Tron and Tron: Legacy. It'll be interesting to see if anything from the series makes it into the films and what kind of new elements we'll get to continue the story. Stay tuned for more. Excited?

as long as Olivia Wilde comes back. I don't care how they shoehorn her in either...

si1ver on Dec 7, 2012

Nice...hopefully it will be stronger...story-wise.

Xerxexx on Dec 5, 2012

Crossing my fingers for Joseph Kosinski to return as the director. I'm a little disappointed that they didn't get a better writer. That was the only problem for me in Tron: Legacy.

Smurfman Sassafras on Dec 5, 2012

Joseph Kosinski is already attached to direct, so you can rejoice.

Ethan Anderton on Dec 5, 2012

And rejoice I shall.

Am I the only one that thought Tron:Legacy was really good? Not perfect but I liked everything about it.

octopus9498 on Dec 6, 2012

no, I loved the movie!

Michael McRorey on Dec 6, 2012

Definitely not the only one. It had many more things done well than it had otherwise. Definitely entertaining, nostalgic, & beautiful if nothing else.

avconsumer2 on Dec 6, 2012

It was good but the writing was weak. Without the visuals and sound, there wasn't much to it.

"wrote the adaption of Eragon"..... already i'm getting a bad feeling about this. I loved Tron Legacy, though parts of it could've been better, overall I enjoyed the film and continuation of the story. I want a third film and I want to be at least as good if not better than Legacy. So while I have uneasy feelings about the development of it, I'll withhold judgement until I hear more about what they plan to do with the franchise

Armeetapus16 on Dec 5, 2012

I'm with you on that one. Eragon, while not a total pile of crap, wasn't very good. The dialogue was pretty cliched and downright awful in some parts.

octopus9498 on Dec 6, 2012

Was it? That's troubling... Some of the dialogue in Legacy was great. Biodigital jazz, man.

Flynn Lives!!! Best news I've heard all week!

Renovatio430 on Dec 5, 2012

YES!!!! TRON LIVES!!!! So long as you bring back Cillian Murphy as Edward Dillinger and make him the villian, while bringing back Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund... I will then be sold.

DarthVerous on Dec 5, 2012

Gonna add a Bruce Boxleitner to that.

avconsumer2 on Dec 6, 2012

And Cindy Morgan.

Tron: Legacy is (somewhat guiltily) my favourite movie of all time. This is welcome news. I had no issues at all with the story in Legacy, but I'm not against a writer switch either, since that type of thing helps franchises stay fresh and keep changing. Hell, even though I love Kosinski, I'd be fine with a director switch. (PS - you're keeping Daft Punk. This is non-negotiable.)

OfficialJab on Dec 5, 2012

ur favorite movie of all time?? U must be 12. O_o

whut?????? on Dec 5, 2012

Note that I said favourite, not 'the best I've seen'. I'm not saying anything about the quality of the movie (except the music), just how I enjoy it. I also love Apocalypse Now, but would much rather pop in TL almost any day. Forgive me, but seeing your comment, I can't imagine you being any older than twelve, either.

OfficialJab on Dec 5, 2012

"Favorite movie of all time" means just that.

castingcouch on Dec 6, 2012

Means its my favourite, doesn't mean I think it's the greatest. You don't think they're exclusive things?

Richie G on Dec 5, 2012

Already want to take bets if they use a "cubed" three for the actual title?

DAVIDPD on Dec 5, 2012

I'll take that over Tron 3D. I hope we're past that by then.

OfficialJab on Dec 6, 2012

How about Tron 36DDD? 🙂

Robert Kent on Dec 11, 2012

I LOVE TRON!!!!!! This was an excellent example of the music playing a significant role in the effectiveness of the narrative. DAF PUNK PLEASE!!! Just beef up the story/character development and we are gold.

"he wrote the adaptation of Eragon" That doesn't make me feel hopeful.

PsychoX on Dec 6, 2012

Surely there are some more experienced quality writers out there who can be set to task. If Disney wants a hit and something more successful than Legacy, why do they settle for some noob with bad movies on their resume?

castingcouch on Dec 6, 2012

I hope Daft Punk returns to score again.

Michael McRorey on Dec 6, 2012

Keep Daft Punk in the soundtrack!!!!

GERARDO on Dec 6, 2012

Tron 2 writer must have sucked pretty bad hope they make it something better.

redskulllives on Dec 7, 2012

I loved the last two!

abovocom on Dec 8, 2012

Tron: Legacy was a huge disappointment. If there's a sequel, I will be avoiding it.
