Uma Thurman

When Danish director Lars Von Trier became persona non grata at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011 after announcing his next project would be a sexually explicit movie called Nymphomaniac, it's safe to say he got everyone's attention. By casting Antichrist star Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stellan Skarsgard in the lead roles, along with Shia LaBeouf in a supporting role in which he'll reportedly have unsimulated sex, Von Trier raised the bar even higher, and now THR reports that Kill Bill star Uma Thurman is coming along for the sexually charged ride too, making this the first time she's working with the controversial director.

The film, which will be released in both softcore and hardcore versions, centers on Gainsbourg's character, a woman named Jo who is badly beaten and discovered in an alleyway by a bachelor (Skarsgard) who cleans her up. During this process, she tells him her life's story of erotic adventures from birth to age 50, apparently leaving no detail unrevealed. The film also stars The Adventures of Tintin lead Jamie Bell, Stacy Martin, Connie Nielsen, and, surprisingly, Christian Slater, but aside from Gainsbourg and Skarsgard, no other character descriptions have come out, so it's all speculation at this point. Even Thurman's role is still in the dark, but with production already underway in Germany, expect more details on this one soon.

On the paper I don't like this cast (except for Gainsbourg and Skarsgard). Way too mainstream. Though I'm sure Von Trier will make them fit in somehow, I don't see them as actors that would fit his films aesthetically or based on their screen persona. I hope he proves me wrong.

I'm not a prude or anything (I love me some porn), but how is this going to fly if Hollywood had a semi-meltdown over Brown Bunny?

"When Danish director Lars Von Trier became persona non grata at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011 after announcing his next project would be a sexually explicit movie called Nymphomaniac, it's safe to say he got everyone's attention." Confusing wording, or a language thing? It sounds like his announcement of making a film called Nymphomaniac got him barred/banned from the Cannes Festival. It was not. It was his poorly thought out comments and jokes on how he "felt like a nazi" and similar. I'm sure that press conference is still up on youtube 🙂

Antichrist is one of the worst movies I've even had the misfortune to sit through.
