"A great war has begun between man and the sea…" We've got another awesome short today! Hopefully you're not having sushi for lunch? This rather amusing proof-of-concept short, directed by Dan Blank, is called Monster Roll, and it's a funny high concept comedy about sushi chefs vs sea monsters. "It's a crazy idea, but one we just really wanted to see made. So, we made it." The story is fun, it's kind of violent, and while the effects do need more work, I think everything feels fine in context and plays well anyway. It's just a highly entertaining proof-of-concept. It gets really good when they step outside of "Sushi Hut" in LA. Enjoy!
Monster Roll was debuted online via Vimeo today. It was written & directed by Dan Blank. As introduced: "Proof-of-concept for a feature about sushi chefs fighting sea monsters. It's a crazy idea, but one we just really wanted to see made. So, we made it." The cast includes Masashi Odate, Steve Howey, Hidetoshi Imura and Gerald Okamura. The short was produced by Erich Lochner & Matt Miller, and Dan Blank & Sarah Blank. I'm glad I had a chance to check this out, it was a lot of fun, and with the right budget I would love to see a full-length feature, could be interesting. For more info: monsterroll.com. I really enjoyed that. I got more satisfaction out of that 6 minutes than 90% of the movies out there. The acting and writing was perfect. A perfectectly edited 6 minutes of pure entertainment.
