Starship Troopers Sequel Trailer

"I always get the shakes before a drop." While we expect this to go straight-to-DVD, I'm such a big Starship Troopers fan, and kind of on a sci-fi high with Prometheus (and Hunger Games), I wanted to feature it anyway. IGN has debuted the first teaser trailer for Starship Troopers: Invasion, the new CG animated movie that Sony is making. We first covered the announcement for it last year, including that Casper Van Dien might be back to voice one of the characters, but there's still not much confirmed yet. That said, we do get a quick tease here, and while it's not much I'm kind of intrigued. Take a look and tell us what you think.

Watch the first teaser trailer for Shinji Aramaki's Starship Troopers: Invasion, originally from IGN:

The story centers around two teams of Roughnecks: the Alpha 1 team embarking on a mission to rescue the distant outpost Fort Casey and the K-12 team already stationed at Fort Casey. The two war-depleted squads must band together with a common objective, but personalities and ambition ensure a bumpy ride.

Starship Troopers: Invasion is directed by Japanese filmmaker Shinji Aramaki, of Appleseed & Appleseed: Ex Machina, as well as a Halo Legends segment previously. The script is by Flint Dille (Dragonstrike), obviously based on Robert A. Heinlein's novel, and this version is supposed to be more of a sequel to the original 1997 Starship Troopers movie than any of its crappy sequels. We don't have much release info yet, but it is expected to go straight-to-DVD sometime this year. For updates, follow the film's production blog.

Looks alright! Hopefully it will be up there with the first movie!

I'm a huge fan of the book and the movies and this looks amazing.  You know, animation is reaching the point that's where it's so life like they'll soon be able to do a sequel to movie such as Casablanca and you'll actually believe that Bogart and Bergman are alive and in it.

And you notice that the trailer's narration is the opening lines from the novel, right? ST has had a huge influence in anime and manga, and they even did an anime ST miniseries back in the 1980s. An article on Naoyuki Katoh, the Japanese SF artist who did the cover art for the Japanese edition of ST, can be found here with some cool ST images(but you'll have to scroll down a bit):

I once almost got in a fight with a guy that was 6 foot 9 and 250 pounds of solid muscle. I didn't fight, and I quit right away. Get a less generic tagline...

It's not just a's one of the most noteworthy lines of the first says a lot about the ideology of the world shown in these films.

Loved the book, the movie and the animated series.  Looks like this will pick up from the animated series so, I'm in.

"Starship Troopers: Invasion is directed by Japanese filmmaker Shinji Aramaki, of Appleseed & Appleseed: Ex Machina, as well as a Halo Legends segment previously." -OK, sold, I'm in! 🙂

Agreed. Appleseed is in my top 10.

Same here.  Aramaki certainly knows how to get the best out CG animation, and the dude's an incredible mecha designer as well.

I am a huge fan of Starship Troopers. Just not a fan of the movies.

maybe this will inspire a new FPS troopers game?

Same here, Xerxexx.  I also dig the fact that the trailer's narration is the opening lines of the novel!

Aramaki's segment for Halo: Legends was the best, hand came the closest to translating the video game directly into an awesome sci-fi movie.

Chris_G on Mar 18, 2012

Agreed.  It also helped that he was a huge fan of the game too.  Plus, he also designed the powered suit from the "Prototype" segment.

Good point. The bit in the Package where the bubble shield drops and there's that one second of freeze frame before they start running is so good. The way then that the music swells as the three are running down the corridor with the slo mo grenade throwing makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. I like the look of this trailer. The slow building music is pretty good and the armour and CGI looks top draw.

Dig it.

Back when the Final Fantasy Movie came out, I remember thinking how awesome it would be to see a Starship Troopers movie done the same way (The tech & her recurrent dream reminding me most of SST).  I sit with a very tempered, yet very enthusiastic optimism for this project.

I am so glad that I've never watched Starship Troopers 2 or 3. The original is one of my favorite sci-fi movies. It will be nice to get a TRUE sequel 15 years later.

Chris_G on Mar 19, 2012

Same here, it still holds up as one of the best sci-fi movies of all time...

3 wasn't that bad. 2 was atrocious. I would say give 3 a shot someday if your a fan. It's not sequential in story. They brought Casper back too so that makes it worth it.

This seems incredibly similar to the Starcraft 2 Cinematic trailer.
