Watch: How the Irresponsible Scientists of 'Prometheus' Get Trained

Prometheus Training Video

It's been two weeks since Ridley Scott's return to sci-fi, the Alien prequel Prometheus, hit theaters, and people are still talking about it. Most of the talk isn't excitement but rather debate and gripes about the film (though there's still plenty of loyal defenders), and from all this talk has come an entertaining critique of one of the most consistent complaints: the wholly ignorant, irresponsible and incompetent crew of Prometheus which apparently has no regard for proper science and handling of delicate, unknown, extra-terrestrial materials. The comedy troupe Barely Political decided to call them out in this hilarious video.

Here's the faux training video for Prometheus scientists from Barely Political via SlashFilm:

Seriously, this video hits the nail right on the head. While watching the film, even on first viewing, I was baffled at how irresponsible these scientists, who are so thrilled to find extra-terrestrial life, but apparently have no desire to preserve it properly, went about their business. It was like they were 3-year old children in a toy museum. Let's make a digital map, but not use it to get back to the ship! Of course, despite the problems in the film, I found Prometheus moderately entertaining, but still enjoy this video poking fun.

That's why it is called a "popcorn film". ...

Zanpher on Jun 22, 2012

It should not be.Not the way they were presenting this thing to us during promotion.Supposedly it was going to blow our minds away.My reaction to it was first "meh" and then disapointement. They showed us old chewed up SF tropes we've all seen on Stargate,Star Trek ect. And why should a popcorn film be inherently stupid?

Here we go again on Jun 23, 2012

Most Ridley films are not. Popcorn films = shit usually.

chjapa on Jun 23, 2012

Uhh,, you might want to watch a Ridley film first ... Also, as for your definition of Popcorn Film .... that is a good one!!

Zanpher on Jun 23, 2012

popcorn flicks do not cost 130 million to make.

Dan Hibiki on Jun 25, 2012

So Transformers franchise is art?And Battleship? All Roland Emmerich movies?

le what? on Jun 25, 2012

It's a blockbuster. Ask Ebert what "art" is.

Dan Hibiki on Jun 25, 2012

Loved the film. Laughed during this clip. It's all entertainment...

Honestly, the crew being logical dumbasses kind of makes sense... I kinda assumed most were mildly autistic, and were the very best in their respective fields, but just fucking suck at logic.

Greg dinskisk on Jun 22, 2012

Explain how a person can be a scientist and suck at logic?I am willing to accept that perhaps they are not brilliant in every aspect but to be down right dumb as fuck really does not make any sense, for a scientist. For a cartoon of a character in a B- movie ,sure. For a real scientist,no way. It's a poorly written script.Just accept it.

It can if they are exceedingly smart in one particular subject. This project of going to LV-223 (I think that's the right one...) seems like the Weyland company chose particular people that were the absolute best in their own unique fields. Usually if someone is an expert in a particular field, then their mind lacks in other areas. In the biologists case, he could probably name every animal that has evidence of existing on Earth, but obviously has logic issues.

Greg dinskisk on Jul 9, 2012

The supposedly cutting edge PhD scientists portrayed in the movie are worse than college grads. And epic fail for making the biologiest and the geologist look like some kinda freak show and a career counstruction worker.

jzsn on Jun 23, 2012

Well, they could be eccentric, there's nothing wrong with that, but to make them as stupid as they did for this movie is just weak writting. It's the symptom of putting plot before the characters when it should be other way around.Characters should drive the plot and not vice versa. For a good movie anyway. This is just B grade material. It's insulting to the audience.

"weak writting"

Chiroptera Exsanguination on Jun 23, 2012

What's your point? Is he wrong maybe?

Lets just be happy Jar Jar Binks didn't show up out of nowhere during the movie, lol. Is anyone really excited for a sequel though? That's the question that should be asked. I don't really care for a sequel but just to see the space jockey in action was enough to satisfy my curiousity and I think it's best to leave things as it is for the audience to draw up their own conclusions cause it seems like there will be more b.s. to be had from Lindeloff. Yes Lindeloff I'm tired of the b.s. I had enough of it from LOST don't spill it over on the big screen...

BinaryChaos on Jun 23, 2012

Too late. The shit has hit the fan..screen.

Lindelof y u so Lost? on Jun 24, 2012

That was gold. My hat's off to all involved. The lacklustre attitudes of the science team were as distracting as their general incompetence. I remember noting the same thing when watching Stargate many years ago. The military guys bitched from the start rather than being amazed and in awe.

SV7 on Jun 23, 2012

I mean... they didn't even get briefed until they were on the alien planet FFS. Who takes a 2 year mission then gets the briefing? This was good stuff though. I hope the Rifftrax guys riff this movie, it will be the only way I ever see it again.

D on Jun 24, 2012

lol - that was pretty spot on. Will say, saw it a 2nd time this weekend - thought it was better. Didn't really answer any more questions, but did fill in some holes, was able to pay closer attention without mind blowing visuals.... blowing mind so much. Still want a sequel.
