Whoa - M83 is Scoring Tom Cruise / Joe Kosinski's Sci-Fi 'Oblivion'
This is awesome. It was Joe Kosinski who took a risk getting Daft Punk to score Tron Legacy, but the results were superb, a great score that I still find myself listening to today. Now he's mixing it up again with his next sci-fi feature, Oblivion, due out early next year starring Tom Cruise as "one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth." Thanks to an news on The Playlist, Kosinski has secured French electronic band M83 to score the movie, with frontman Anthony Gonzalez leading the way. As a fan of M83 myself, this is great to hear, especially knowing their sound and how it will play into the world Kosinski has created.
So the trend of hiring bands and up-and-coming musicians as composers continues, this time with a focus on Gonzalez and M83. The Playlist has some great quotes about how this all came together. Gonzalez told them, "I've wanted to do soundtracks for so long, and starting with such an ambitious project, especially in the sci-fi category, means a lot to me." He also reveals: "My vision is really to have a combination of very electronic moments, very M83, and sometimes merge into something more soundtrack-y, but my kind of soundtracks." Sounds great to me, I'm excited to hear it already. Kosinski explains how they're a perfect fit:
"The story has a small cast of characters, it was designed as kind of a character driven story, but at the same time it takes place in a vast world. So I need a score that is both emotional, but at the same time can feel big and have a lot of space in it. And his music has that. It's emotional, it's triumphant, it just has a spirit and a life to it," Kosinski added. "It can feel very intimate but it also can feel just huge when it has to. His music is able to capture all those different feelings and qualities simultaneously."
Kosinski's Oblivion (also known as Horizons), which has already been shooting, stars Tom Cruise as Jack, as well as Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Zoe Bell, Andrea Riseborough, Melissa Leo and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, Jack's soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands. Kosinski has developed this for years, with a writing credit along with William Monahan. Universal currently has Oblivion scheduled to hit theaters on April 26th next year.

Sweet. They were built for sci-fi. Always felt they should have scored Rick Linklater's "A Scanner Darkly"
