Happy / RZA

Just this morning, we got a glimpse at some brand new posters for former Wu-Tang Clan leader RZA's directorial debut, The Man With The Iron Fists. Now THR is reporting that the hip-hop mogul has lined up another directorial effort, and is collaborating with one of the biggest names in comics in the process. RZA will direct Happy!, with a script written by comics icon Grant Morrison and based on the scribe's most recent comic of the same name, which came out last month. It's a unique fantasy story, and the tone and setting are being compared to properties as diverse as It’s a Wonderful Life, Sin City, and Care Bears. Huh?

The story follows Nick Sax, a corrupt hitman and former police officer who is injured after a hit goes south. But Nick can suddenly see Happy, a cheery blue horse that refuses to back down from adversity regardless of the obstacles in his path. A few days before Christmas, Sax teams up with Happy to save a troubled kid's life and potentially find redemption in his burned out city. It's a ridiculous concept, but maybe using some of the motion capture techniques that Seth MacFarlane used in Ted, it might not look too cheesy.

RZA's made some excellent choices in the film world so far, surrounding himself with talented people who are also passionate about the source material he's working with (he co-wrote Fists with fellow martial arts fan Eli Roth, and obviously Morrison knows a thing or two about comics), and I'm glad we have people like this making movies that are weird, off-kilter, and outside of the normal studio fare to keep things interesting for moviegoers. The plan is to try to put the project together and then start looking for financing or a studio to pick it up, so there's a chance this one could never actually see the inside of a theater. But if Fists does well at the box office, chances are RZA will build up a bit of juice he can use to make things happen for Happy!, so we'll keep an eye on this one.

If you haven't read 'Happy' yet I totally recommend it. It's really good! That said, only issue 1 is out so far.

I'll believe it once I have bought a ticket, Grant Morrison's work has always been shut down; and that makes me Sad!
