'Yes Man' Scribes Hired to Pen 'Bruce Almighty' Sequel for Jim Carrey
Last summer, funnyman Jim Carrey hinted that he might be taking part in a couple of sequels to two of his more popular and funny comedies. Both Dumb & Dumber and Bruce Almighty were said to have sequels in development, and we've already heard that Peter and Bobby Farrelly are already planning on getting a Dumb & Dumber sequel off the ground after The Three Stooges. Now Universal has followed through on Carrey's hints too as Variety has word that the studio is in talks with Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel, the team behind the scripts for Hot Tub Time Machine and Yes Man, to script the sequel to the 2003 film.
The original film saw Bruce Nolan as a down-on-his-luck news anchor lacking any faith in God until the creator himself, played by Morgan Freeman, bestows upon him all of God's powers. At this point it's not clear if Freeman, or even love interest Jennifer Aniston would return for the sequel, but it's probably a safe bet. The question is where can this comedy go for a new story? Evan Almighty, with Steve Carell, took the Noah's Ark storyline, but there's plenty of Bible tales that can be used for a contemporary storyline, so hopefully they can come up with something decent. However, after Evan Almighty bombed at the box office, I wouldn't expect Tom Shadyac to come back and direct this sequel, unless Carrey really wants him in the director's chair and Universal is feeling lucky. I'm just hoping it turns out better than Evan Almighty and Yes Man, which were both comedic failures in my honest opinion.

...and all across town, writers with good original scripts, rejected at every turn because they won't disinter a franchise or spawn merchandise, say the exact same thing.

Carrey must be getting pretty desperate for a hit.

They could try to bring back Steve Carell, team him up with Carrey and doing the Cain & Abel Story or something like that 😉 Or put Carrey and a love interest in a new paradise for an Adam & Eve Story.
