D23 Reveals First Look at Pixar's 'The Good Dinosaur' + Voice Cast
"What if the asteroid missed the earth 65 million years ago?" That's where idea for Pixar's next original movie, The Good Dinosaur, began. It addresses the question of: what if the dinosaurs survived and never died off? The answer: they'd be living with humans and interacting with us like it's normal. Disney's D23 Expo is underway in Anaheim today and the first big presentation was hosted by John Lasseter looking at the upcoming Disney Animation slate. They revealed a quick first look at the new Good Dinosaur movie and announced the voice cast, featuring the likes of John Lithgow and Frances McDormand voicing dinosaurs.
Pixar is very careful about revealing plot elements in their movies, and they're keeping these next few under wraps. However, thanks to the reveal today, we now know some details about The Good Dinosaur: it will focus on an Apatosaurus family (see the photo below) that work as farmers. Co-director Pete Sohn explains: "The modern dinosaurs are farmers. We actually designed them to function as their own farm equipment." So triceratops are bulldozers, and stegosauruses "have spiky tails that mow down acres of crops," and the apatosauruses, with their long necks, plant and plow the farm fields (since they're herbivores). Update: Even more concept art for The Good Dinosaur debuted officially by Disney (found via SlashFilm):
In this story, the dinosaurs are the dominant species on Earth (since the asteroid missed and they lived on for another million years). One day one of the dinosaurs discovers a human toddler that isn't afraid of these creatures, and they adopt him as their pet. Arlo, the youngest and lead dinosaur's name, will be voiced by Lucas Neff (seen on "Raising Hope"). Neil Patrick Harris and Judy Greer voice his siblings Cliff and Ivy. Their parents will be voiced by John Lithgow and Frances McDormand, as Poppa and Momma, respectively. And Bill Hader voices another one of Arlo's siblings named Forrest. Solid cast for this so far.
Footage at D23 showed a big asteroid missing Earth, and a streak of blue light passing by in the night sky. Our colleague Eric Vespe of AICN attending the presentation tweeted: "It's a buddy story between a young dinosaur and a young human. Made the audience go 'awwww' at least 12 times." Our friend Peter Sciretta from /Film loved the footage as well, tweeting: "Pixar's Good Dinosaur first footage looked very beautiful, not very cartoony, almost like a segment from Fantasia." Aside from some early concept art, we haven't seen too much from The Good Dinosaur in public yet, but I'm sure they'll be releasing a teaser trailer by the end of the year and we'll all finally get a glimpse at this next original story from Pixar due out next summer.
Pixar's The Good Dinosaur is directed by Bob Peterson, co-directed by Pete Sohn, from a story by Enrico Casarosa & Bob Peterson. The project has been in development since 2010 when a very early concept art was discovered in the background of a production video from the animation studio. Stay tuned for more updates.

in a way this film reminds me of The Land Before Time.

This will become today's generation of "Land Before Time". Now they just need to do a live action movie/movie series of Dinotopia, and my life will be complete.

I've been a fan of dinosaurs since I was little, and I'm looking forward to this, mostly since it is not a sequel, prequel or remake
