It looks like there's more crime in Danny Boyle's future. After finishing and releasing the art heist thriller Trance earlier this year, Variety is now reporting that the British filmmaker has signed on to direct a feature adaptation of the documentary Smash and Grab: The Story of the Pink Panthers. Being developed by Pathe and Fox Searchlight, who will both co-finance the project with Boyle's longtime producing partner Christian Colson, the real life story is about a a group of diamond thieves who made off with $30 million in diamonds in a 3-minute heist in London. Directed by Havana Marking, the doc was released this summer.

The report says that Danny Boyle, coming off of directing Trance and the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony, saw the documentary Smash & Grab and "became very interested in turning it into a movie." He got Fox Searchlight involved in helping pull it together, and here we are reporting the news. Fox Searchlight has another documentary being turned into a fictional feature, The Bengali Detective with Stephen Frears attached to direct, in the works already. Before this, Boyle had his name attached to Maximum City and the Trainspotting sequel Porno, but it sounds like those aren't progressing much and this may be next for him.

Here's the full trailer for Havana Marking's Smash & Grab: The Story of the Pink Panthers documentary:

From the doc's synopsis: Their crimes resemble high-octane Hollywood action movies: a sports car speeds through a Dubai shopping mall, crashing into the windows of a Graff jewelry store. Masked, gun-wielding men jump out of the car, and stuff fistfuls of diamonds into their satchels before screeching off. In London, they took all of three minutes to make off with $30 million in diamonds. They are captured -- not in person, but on surveillance tapes that record their astonishing lightning strikes with hypnotic accuracy. Playing like a noir thriller spiced with cutting-edge animation and shocking real surveillance footage, Havana Marking's Smash & Grab doc is an exclusive all-access pass into the mysterious world of international jewel thieves. Dubbed 'The Pink Panthers,' the formidable Balkan gang has stolen nearly a billion dollars worth of jewels from boutiques in the world's most opulent cities including Geneva, Paris, London, Dubai and Tokyo.

We'll be keeping watch for any updates on this project and Danny Boyle's involvement. From the sounds of it, Boyle may end up directing this next, which might be a perfect fit for the filmmaker after his recent work.
